Administrative Committees: Awards Committee
The Awards Committee is appointed annually to review potential recipients of the Renee D. Chapman Award and any other awards established by TS-SIS, including educational grants to support member attendance at AALL-sponsored educational events. The committee consists of a chair and at least two other members. The committee should be in place by the end of December.
Renee D. Chapman Award.
TS-SIS Bylaws, Article IV, Section 5, state:
The Renee D. Chapman Award is established to recognize and publicize individuals or groups whose efforts have resulted in significant and sustained support in technical services law librarianship. The Executive Board shall appoint a committee of at least three (3) members, designating one (1) member as Committee Chair, to consider nominations for the award. Awards Committee members shall serve for a term of one year.
The award shall be presented at the annual TS-SIS business. The award and plaque can be presented by the Chair of the Awards Committee or by the person or persons who nominated the recipient. The award need not be given each year, but shall be given at least every other year.
The chair:
- Follows the guidelines established in Appendix VI.
- Publicizes the award and solicits nominees through TSLL, the AALL newsletter, the TS-SIS electronic discussion forum (ts-sis@aallnet.org), and other appropriate means.
- If a nominee is chosen, notifies the recipient, the TS-SIS Chair, the Chair of the AALL Awards Committee, and the AALL Executive Director.
- Arranges for AALL to order an appropriate plaque for the recipient.
- Arranges to receive the plaque either through the mail or by picking it up at the Annual Meeting before the TS-SIS business meeting.
- Arranges for someone to present the award and plaque at the TS-SIS business meeting.
Educational Grants.
General educational grants are awarded to section members to support attendance at AALL sponsored educational events related to technical services, including cataloging, preservation, acquisitions, collection development, serials, and management.
The Marla Schwartz grant is a special educational grant intended for newer law librarians and graduate students in library/information studies programs. This grant was established to honor Marla's memory and achievements. The Marla Schwartz grant may be awarded to support attendance at any of the events listed above, and/or, it may be used to support attendance at CONELL. While an applicant for the Schwartz grant need not be a member of either AALL or TS-SIS, the Awards Committee will give preference to those who plan careers in technical services law librarianship.
The chair:
- Follows the specific guidelines established in Appendix VII, "Educational Grants."
- Publicizes grants and solicits applications through TSLL, the TS-SIS electronic discussion forum, and other appropriate means. The deadline for applications may vary, depending on AALL requirements.
- Initiates Committee discussion and decision-making regarding which, if any, of applicants should be considered for the Marla Schwartz grant.
- Notifies recipients by phone. After recipients have been successfully contacted, notifies the TS-SIS Chair and Secretary/Treasurer, and posts an announcement to the TS-SIS electronic discussion forum (ts-sis@aallnet.org).
- Adheres to the budget allocation for educational grants. Each year the TS-SIS Executive Board will determine a maximum amount of funds available for grants. The number of grants awarded will depend upon the amount of funds available, the number of AALL educational events offered that are related to technical services, the number of applications received, and the financial need of the successful applicant(s). The TS-SIS Executive Board shall determine what to do with any unused portion of the allocation for educational grants.
- Submits a written annual report of the committee's activities to the Chair according to the deadline set by the Chair each year.
- Presents a brief verbal summary of this report at the TS-SIS business meeting.
