This group has a long history, having once been the AALL Committee on Law Library Service to Prisoners, and then a Special Interest Section: Law Library Service to Institution Residents.

Current Projects:

  • Increase number of libraries included in Law Libraries Serving Prisoners (LLSP) database.
  • Update the 1996 edition of Recommended Collections for Prison and Other Institution Law Libraries & Guidelines for Prison Law Libraries.
  • Survey prison law libraries to see where they are now, following Casey v. Lewis, 518 U.S. 343 (1996).
  • Develop web page with information on donating books to prison law libraries.

Publications:

  • Directory: Law Libraries Providing Services to Prisoners (print editions published in 1985, 1989, 1990, 1993).
  • Providing Legal Services for Prisoners, a Tool for Correctional Administrators
  • (print editions published in 1977 and 1982). Published in association with the American Correctional Association.
  • Recommended Collections for Prison and Other Institution Law Libraries & Guidelines for Prison Law Libraries (print editions published in 1973, 1976, 1980, 1985, 1990, 1996).

2004 Joint Roundtable: Services to Pro Se Patrons & Prisoners (LISP/RIPS/SR-SIS)
Three AALL Special Interest Sections (Legal Information Services to the Public, Research Instruction & Patron Services, and Social Responsibilities) sponsored a Joint Roundtable at the 2004 Annual Meeting in Boston on the topic of serving pro se patrons and prisoners. PDF versions of several handouts are posted here.
