International Trade Commission (ITC) Research - Tips from the Pros

Join us for a Webinar on December 7

Space is limited.
Reserve your Webinar seat now at: https://www3.gotomeeting.com/register/732984222

The International Trade Commission

(ITC) operates very differently from other IP court venues; cases move through quickly, its precedent is self-contained, and the outcome has extremely high stakes for the litigating companies, allowing infringing products to be stopped at the US border. This means that legal research for the ITC is often a "get the answer now" proposition and the various types of documents and proceedings are strange to those unfamiliar with this unique venue.

In this 45 minute webinar, Sharon Lindsey West of ITC Research will present an overview of how the ITC works generally, the most important types of documents, how to dig in and find esoteric data, how to determine outcomes, and a few specific techniques to answer market research questions.

Presenter Bio: Sharon Lindsey West has worked closely with ITC documents as co-founder and President of www.itcresearch.com for the past four years.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Participants will understand obstacles specific to searching for ITC records and strategies for overcoming these obstacles
  • Participants will be able to identify the different types of ITC documents and understand their significance
  • Participants will be able to effectively mine ITC data to satisfy reference requests

Course Level: Intermediate

We are starting to collect handouts from the Annual Meeting to post on the PLL website. We'll add them to this page.

A Blog to Promote the Value of Law Firm Librarians

The PLL Executive Board is proud to be part of an exciting new collaboration. Along with our colleagues in the Special Libraries Association Legal Division and the Private Law Libraries Special Interest Group of the Canadian Association of Law Libraries (l’Association Canadienne des Bibliothèques de Droit), we are delighted to unveil On Firmer Ground, a blog that seeks to promote the VALUE of Law Firm Librarians. You can find it at http://www.firmerground.com .

More than just a blog, On Firmer Ground is designed to be a celebration of who law firm librarians are and what they do. We encourage you to share your thoughts on the featured postings and engage your fellow law firm librarians in meaningful discussion. This new blog is the first international collaboration of its kind and represents a chance for us to develop a common voice and strategies for success that transcend geographic boundaries. We hope to have even more global partners signed on soon! It is a great time to be part of this profession and, working together, we raise its profile. We invite all our law firm librarians to get involved, represent your profession and SIS, and make the most of this powerful new resource.

This initiative directly fosters several of the goals in the new PLL Strategic Directions Plan 2011-2013 to have the voice and value of the law firm librarians heard and communicated throughout the greater legal community. On Firmer Ground is an important step in that direction. We invite the entire legal information industry to join the conversation.

Check out On Firmer Ground today (http://www.firmerground.com). The first post is an excellent piece on Cost Prevention versus Cost Recovery. We look forward to your thoughts. Let the discussion begin! Is your library on firmer ground?

A New Strategic Direction for Private Law Libraries Special Interest Section

The PLL board has been hard at work over the last six months creating a new Strategic Directions Plan to help guide our section through these uncertain times. A draft of the three-year plan that would take effect July 1 , 2011 is available here. While the plan is ambitious, it is achievable. We believe that following this road map will lead to a stronger and more successful PLL organization better able to:

  • Champion the value of PLL members to the information and legal marketplaces
  • Strengthen member networks of information professionals, recruiters, MLS degree program professors and deans, vendors, students and related industry partners
  • Expand professional development opportunities that provide evolving skill sets and expertise
  • Promote private law librarians as information leaders within the legal communities where we live and work
  • Increase PLL visibility and influence within AALL

The PLL Strategic Directions Plan lays out an approach wherein we can all work together in a cooperative and collaborative fashion to ensure that PLL meets as many of our collective strategic needs as possible. It is vitally important that everyone's voice is heard and that you have an opportunity to provide feedback so that Board can make revisions before adopting the plan in June.

To that end, we would like to hear from all 1400+ PLL members by May 31, 2011. Please contact in-coming PLL President Steve Lastres via email or at 212-909-6279 with your comments.

Unraveling the Mysteries of the Law Firm Marketing Department

The PLL-SIS program, Unraveling the Mysteries of the Law Firm Marketing Department, is now available at no charge to all AALL members on the AALL2go site.

This program can be shared with chapters, other library staff or other departments if viewed in a group with an AALL member. Arranging a viewing is a nice way to provide no-cost training to your staff or share thoughts with another department. You can use the discussion guide that was prepared for this program as a way to get your group discussion going. Since the program is an on-demand videotape, AALL members can also watch it at their convenience at the AALL2go site. (The link and log-in instructions are at the end of this announcement.)

The program speakers are the CMO and Director of Client Relations from Morrison & Foerster. The moderator is Kathy Skinner, who manages the Research & Intelligence department at Morrison & Foerster. At Morrison & Foerster, the Research & Intelligence group, (aka the library), reports into the Marketing Department, so the speakers are in a unique position to discuss the role of the library within the larger organization.

This is the third in a series of five programs moderated by PLL members to provide a primer in law firm management from the view point of firm managers and administrators. The series is part of a two year program undertaken by the Private Law Library Special Interest Section (PLL-SIS) of AALL. The goal is to identify significant changes taking place in the legal world, to understand how these changes provide opportunities for assuming leadership roles, and to develop concrete plans for librarians to become leaders within their organizations. The culmination of these efforts, the Change as Action Summit, will take place in Philadelphia on Saturday, July 23, 2011.
