Module 3: The Superintendent Of Documents
(Sudocs) Classification System

Class Stem: Book Numbers

Some series have a volume and number. For example:

  L 2.41/2:29/6Employment and Earnings, volume 29, number 6
Some series have "Cutter numbers."
Unnumbered publications have a book number, called a Cutter, based on a coding system using the key word in the title. For example:

NAS 1.2:G 14Implications of the IRAS Data for Galactic Gamma-Ray Astronomy and EGRET
Here, the Cutter number is based on the title keyword, gamma ray.
GPO differentiates a completely different title with the same keyword by using /2. For example:

NAS 1.2:G 14/2 Gamma-Ray Astronomy in the Compton Era
