San Diego Librarian Wins
Law Library Journal Article of the Year Award
For Immediate Release
July 3, 2003
A law librarian at the University of San Diego
was selected as the recipient of the 2003 Law
Library Journal Article of the Year Award.
Nancy Carol Carter, director and professor of
law at the University of San Diego School of Law
and Legal Research Center, won the award for her
article “American Indians and Law Libraries:
Acknowledging the Third Sovereign,”
94 L. Lib. J. 7 (2002). The article examines
the dearth of information available in law libraries
about tribal or Native American law and suggestions
to help librarians start to become involved in
the publication and distribution of tribal legal
materials.
The committee found the article to be well researched
for its size. Although the topic lends itself
to even deeper probing, Carter contained her scale
to meet the article length, thereby increasing
the reader’s understanding of this little-known
area of American law.
Established in 1989, this award recognizes outstanding
achievement in research and scholarship as represented
by a published work in Law Library Journal.
A cash prize of $500, donated by CCH Incorporated,
accompanies the award.
The award will be presented July 14 during the
AALL 96th Annual Meeting and Conference in Seattle
during the Association Luncheon.
