Recipients of EIM Awards
Demonstrate Public Relations Savvy and Finesse
For Immediate Release
July 3, 2003
The winners of the 2003 AALL/West Excellence
in Marketing Awards have used creative and innovative
means to market, promote and publicize their libraries
to their communities.
Best Campaign
The University of San Diego Legal Research Center
received the 2003 EIM award for Best Campaign.
Celebrating Books was a highly publicized event
celebrating the acquisition of the library’s
500,000th volume and showcasing books and testimonials
from community members explaining how particular
books inspired them. The campaign comprised invitations,
press releases, postcards, bookmarks and exhibits.
It raised awareness of the library’s growing
legal collection as well as the importance of
books in people’s lives.
Best Newsletter
The Law Library of Louisiana received the 2003
EIM award for Best Newsletter. De Novo: The Newsletter
of the Law Library is an informative and well-executed
bimonthly newsletter highlighting library services,
collections, librarian accomplishments, research
sources, and local legal history and trivia. The
newsletter circulates to approximately 1,200 judges,
public libraries, law firms, lawyers, academics
and members of the public.
Best Use of Technology
Two libraries share the 2003 award for Best Use
of Technology.
The Seattle University Law Library received the
award for its Virtual Tour offered via the Web.
Created with Macromedia Flash, this mouse-controlled
tour instills a cutting-edge impression of the
library and has enthused alumni, administrators,
prospective students, and parents of current students.
The University at Buffalo State University of
New York Law Library received the award for its
Entry Display. The display is a 42-inch plasma
screen near the library entrance used for law
school and library announcements as well as news
coverage during important national events. The
display promotes library services and programs
using up to date technology and also serves the
broader law school community by improving communication.
Best Brochure
The Travis County Law Library received the 2003
EIM award for Best Brochure. Its Name Change Brochure
succinctly explains the convoluted process to
change one’s legal name in a colorful, easy-to-follow,
flow-chart format. The brochure serves the larger
purpose of marketing the library as a key place
for helpful guidance.
Best PR Toolkit
The Cornell Law Library received the 2003 EIM
award for Best Public Relations Tool Kit. Throughout
the year the library performed a variety of public
relations activities to engage its academic community
in library services and events. This included
promoting a significant special collection acquisition,
mounting of an accompanying exhibit, producing
a newsletter, publishing a current awareness service,
and promoting research assistant training programs.
Established by the AALL Public Relations Committee,
the Excellence in Marketing Awards recognize outstanding
public relations activities in five categories
by a person or group affiliated with AALL.
The award will be presented July 14 at the AALL
96th Annual Meeting and Conference in Seattle
during the Association Luncheon.
