Legal Publishing in the 21st Century: A Conversation with the Publishers has been selected by the 2007 AALL Annual Meeting Program Committee (AMPC) as the Hot Topic Program for this year. The transition from print to digital information began in the latter years of the 20th century and has moved forward at an ever-quickening pace in the new millennium. The digital revolution has created new challenges, pressures, and opportunities for both publishers and librarians. Join our librarian moderators and publisher executives on Tuesday, July 17, from 10:45-11:45 a.m. for a wide-ranging conversation on the changing nature of law and law-related publishing. Like the weather in New Orleans in July, this topic is HOT.
Coordinator: Jim Heller, College of William and Mary. Moderators: Jim Heller and Sally Wiant, Washington and Lee. Panelists: Mary Katherine Callaway, director of LSU Press; Dennis Hauptley, vice-president for new product development at Thomson-West; Scott Livingston, vice president of research solutions at LexisNexis U.S. Legal Market; Dick Spinelli, senior vice president at William S. Hein and Co.; and Paul Wojcik, chairman of the board and chief executive officer of BNA.
AALL continues to focus attention on the authenticity and official status of online versions of state-level legal sources. To carry on the work of the successful AALL Summit on Authentic Legal Information in the Digital Age held in Chicago April 20-21, we now have created a Webpage for the summit and subsequent activities. Following the link from the new image for the summit on the AALLNET homepage takes you to the summit Webpage, with the agenda, slide presentations of various speakers, and the State-by-State Report on Authentication. Additional content will be added by summit delegates in the months ahead, reporting on further developments.
To learn more about the summit and the current status of work to ensure authentic and official government information, plan to attend Program E-1: AELIC’s Survey on Authentication of Government Information: A Year Later and Still Challenging at the AALL Annual Meeting in New Orleans. One of the speakers will be Associate Justice Herbert B. Dixon, Jr., of the Superior Court of the District of Columbia. He was a delegate at the summit and is co-chair of the ABA Judicial Division’s Committee on Court Technology.
The AALL Committee on Relations with Information Vendors (CRIV) invites you to attend Licensing 101 for Law Libraries on June 22, from 1-2 p.m. (EST).
Today’s law librarian is often involved in licensing negotiations with information providers in order to acquire access to electronic information for his or her users. This can be a daunting responsibility for librarians without any experience or training in this area. Licensing 101 for Law Librarians will introduce participants to the process of licensing and the components of a license agreement. Participants will also discover a collection of tools and resources available to aid in the process, including the AALL Licensing Principles for Electronic Resources and the AALL Guide to Fair Business Practices for Legal Publishers.
Presenter: Tracy Thompson, executive director of the New England Law Library Consortium (see speaker bio here). This is an introductory program for library staff new to licensing negotiations. CRIV plans to offer a more advanced Webinar on licensing in 2007-2008.
Member fee: $15 (please enter the MEMBERS ONLY rate code to pay member price); non-member fee: $20. Contact Nina Platt for more information. The deadline to register is June 15.
Help ensure that your listing in the 2007-2008 AALL Directory and Handbook is accurate—update your public address in the AALLNET Members Only Section by June 30.
Did you change jobs this year? Please note that you are not able to change your employer information online. Please contact Membership Services Coordinator Hannah Phelps at 312/939-4764, extension 10, before June 30 to update your employer information.
Please note too that the Directory will not be printed and distributed until October. However, changes made after June 30 will not be in the Directory. If you know that your contact information will change between now and then, please send the new information to Hannah before June 30.
If you do not wish to be listed in the Directory, you can exclude your listing under "Mail Options" in the AALLNET Members Only Section.
Library directors, do you need to update your library’s profile in the Geographical section of the AALL Directory and Handbook? For instance, has your address, number of lawyers/students, or number of volumes changed? If so, please contact Membership Services Coordinator Hannah Phelps at 312/939-4764, extension 10, before June 30 to update your library’s information.
Thanks for your help to make the 2007-2008 AALL Directory accurate and up-to-date.
Sincerely,

Sarah (Sally) Holterhoff
