Sarah (Sally) Holterhoff - AALL President

Thursday, May 17, 2007

It is my pleasure to announce the names of the 2007 recipients of AALL’s most prestigious awards, the Marian Gould Gallagher Distinguished Service Award and the Joseph L. Andrews Bibliographical Award. Please join me in congratulating our distinguished colleagues described below. The June issue of AALL Spectrum will include a more complete profile of each of them. We will formally honor the Gallagher and Andrews Award winners at the AALL Annual Meeting in New Orleans, during the Closing Banquet on Tuesday, July 17.

Three to Receive Marian Gould Gallagher Distinguished Service Award

Carol Billings, Roger Jacobs, and Cossette Sun, three longtime and respected law librarians and AALL members, have been selected to receive the Marian Gould Gallagher Distinguished Service Award in 2007 for their dedication to the profession and to AALL.

Carol BillingsCarol Billings, director of the Law Library of Louisiana, has worked throughout her career to network with colleagues within the profession and with members of other important organizations. During her year as AALL president (1994-95), she invited VIPs from legal-related organizations and other library groups to a National Conference on Legal Information Issues, which was held in connection with the AALL Annual Meeting. She strengthened AALL’s ties with the British and Irish Association of Law Librarians, Canadian Association of Law Libraries, and International Association of Law Libraries. She has also been an active member and leader of the Southeastern Chapter of the American Association of Law Libraries, the New Orleans Association of Law Libraries, and the Louisiana Library Association.

Roger JacobsRoger Jacobs has had an active 44-year career in law librarianship and legal education, including seven years as librarian of the court for the Supreme Court of the United States (1978-85). Most recently he was associate dean and professor of law at the Kresge Law Library at the University of Notre Dame until his retirement in 2006. He is the only person to have been the president of two national law library associations: the Canadian Association of Law Libraries (1971-73) and AALL (1981-82). During his year as AALL president, the Association hired its first executive director. He also served as a council member for the American Bar Association’s Section of Legal Education and Admissions to the Bar and has been a member of more than 30 law school site evaluation teams.

Cossette SunCossette Sun, law library director of the Bernard E. Witkin Alameda County Law Library in Oakland, California, has spent many years working as an advocate for county law libraries in her state. She served as president of the California Council of County Law Libraries from 1982-84. She was also a member of the Judicial Council of California Task Force on County Law Libraries. She was an AALL Executive Board member from 1999-2002, and she has been a champion of diversity efforts within the Association, including her service as chair of the Diversity Committee (1996-97). During her career, she has been a mentor and role model for many of the Association’s Asian members. She has also served on the Law Library Microform Consortium Advisory Council and Board of Directors.

Prestatehood Legal Materials to Receive Andrews Award

Prestatehood Legal MaterialsPrestatehood Legal Materials: A Fifty-State Research Guide, Including New York City and the District of Columbia has been selected to receive the Joseph L. Andrews Bibliographical Award. The award honors the work of the book’s editors, Michael Chiorazzi and Marguerite Most, and that of 69 individual authors. Prestatehood Legal Materials is a two-volume 1,500-page compilation of bibliographic essays and annotated bibliographies, which identify the sources of law for colonial and territorial jurisdictions prior to statehood. The thorough footnotes and comprehensive index make it an effective research tool.

As Chiorazzi explains in the preface, the inspiration for the book came from his idea for an article about early legal materials in what became the state of Washington for possible publication in Legal Reference Services Quarterly. When he realized the potential value of such a resource for all 50 states and put out a call for authors, he received an overwhelming response, and the article idea soon morphed into a major book project. The editors created a Web page where updates, corrections, and additions to the book will be posted. This feature will add to the book’s continued usefulness as a reference source.

Sincerely,

Sarah (Sally) Holterhoff
