Joan Biskupic to be Keynote Speaker for AALL Annual Meeting in New Orleans

Joan BiskupicI am happy to announce that Joan Biskupic, U.S. Supreme Court correspondent for USA Today, will be the keynote speaker for the Opening Session of the 100th AALL Annual Meeting on Sunday, July 15.

Biskupic is the author of the 2005 book Sandra Day O’Connor: How the First Woman on the Supreme Court Became Its Most Influential Justice, which she researched while serving as a fellow at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars. She has also co-authored several reference books about the Supreme Court. She appears frequently as a guest on "Washington Week with Gwen Ifill" on PBS.

Biskupic graduated from Georgetown Law School in 1994. Before joining USA Today, she was a reporter for The Washington Post for eight years, writing primarily about the Supreme Court. In 1991 she won the Everett McKinley Dirksen Award for Distinguished Reporting of Congress for her coverage of the Clarence Thomas hearings. Her career covering the court began in 1989 when she became a legal affairs writer for Congressional Quarterly.

PBS, in conjunction with WNET, will air a two-part special on the history of the Supreme Court this Wednesday, January 31, and next Wednesday, February 7. The second half of the special features Biskupic extensively. You can view an excerpt from the special on YouTube.

Day in the Life Photo Contest 2007 Starts This Week

On your mark, get set, start shooting! A Day in the Life of the Law Library Community Photo Contest starts this Thursday, February 1. Don’t miss out in the fun.

During the month of February, AALL members will take a wide range of photographs of law librarians working, meeting, teaching, and doing all that law librarians do in a given day. Entries are due by the end of the month, and they will be judged online by the membership in April. Winners will be recognized on AALLNET, in the July 2007 issue of AALL Spectrum, and during the AALL Annual Meeting in New Orleans.

Visit the Day in the Life site for complete contest rules, photography tips, and to upload your photo entries.

Sincerely,
