Spring has definitely sprung. Here in New Orleans, the azaleas and camellias are in bloom throughout the city (especially in the Garden District!), and allergies are on the rise. It's also a time of renewal at AALL, with membership renewal notices going out and many new members joining the Association. Look for other items of interest in this March e-newsletter, and happy spring!

It's Time to Renew Your AALL Membership
On March 16, AALL dues invoices for 2009-2010 were mailed to all library directors for their institutionally paid memberships and to all other individual members. The deadline for membership renewal is May 31. Following is the 2009 membership renewal schedule:
March 16: First dues invoices mailed out.
May 1: Second dues invoices mailed out.
July 23: Expiration notices e-mailed to all members—individuals and those paid by institutions.
August 1: Expired members deleted from the AALL membership database and access to the AALLNET Members Only Section and Law Library Journal and AALL Spectrum subscriptions discontinued.

AALL Dues Help for Unemployed Members
To help in these tough times, AALL is offering a discounted membership rate for AALL members who are recently unemployed. The discounted membership appears online and in all public records simply as an "Active" membership but is billed at the student/retired rate ($55 instead of $218). The discounted rate is good through May 31, 2010.
Unemployed AALL members should fill out the online form or contact AALL Membership Services Coordinator Hannah Phelps (312/205-8022) to sign up.
New Advocacy Toolkit for the 111th Congress
The Government Relations Office is pleased to announce an exciting new resource to help AALL members and chapters become effective advocates for law libraries. The Advocacy Toolkit for the 111th Congress: 2009-2010 is designed to help you learn more about AALL's ambitious legislative agenda.
The purposes of the Advocacy Toolkit are to:
- illustrate the many ways in which you can get involved in advocacy;
- notify you of the latest action alert so that you can promote our legislative efforts;
- present you with a comprehensive look at the issues and legislation we are currently working on; and
- provide AALL members and chapters the tools you need to become effective advocates on both the federal and state levels.
The Advocacy Toolkit is available as a live document and as a PDF on the AALL Government Relations Office Web site. I encourage you to sign up for the RSS feed to receive valuable updates, learn about AALL's latest action alert, and monitor our legislative priorities.
There's also still time to register for AALL's 2009 Day on the Hill: Legislative Advocacy Leadership Training on July 24. Hopefully, the toolkit and your participation in our Day on the Hill will provide you with the tools you need to join our advocacy team and help promote AALL's policy agenda!

New Tools for Success Added to Wiki
We know that many of our members have been hit hard by the economic crisis. AALL is here to offer resources to help you get through it, especially the Tools for Success in Today's Economy wiki. Teach-In Kits Available Next Monday
The Research Instruction and Patron Services Special Interest Section (RIPS-SIS) proudly releases the 2009 National Legal Research Teach-In Kit on March 23. Each year, RIPS creates a Teach-In Kit containing fresh materials for use in your institution's promotional and instructional activities. This year's kit includes legal research word search puzzles, illustration charts for secondary sources, presentations on the Bluebook, administrative law, statutory research, various research assignments, and many other wonderful materials.
The 2009 Teach-In Kit will be available on the RIPS-SIS Web page. A kit overview and previous Teach-In Kits are also available at that location.
AALL Members Get Reduced Rate for Online Graduate Class
AALL members can register for a reduced rate for the new University of Illinois Graduate School of Library and Information Science (GSLIS) LEEP distance course June 13-August 8, titled "Law Librarianship." The course will be taught by subject specialist Stephanie Davidson, head of public services and assistant professor of library administration. Various types of law libraries and functions within the law library, including legal reference, technical services, management, and collection development will be covered. The course will meet synchronously once per week online using the LEEP learning management system, with a required on-campus session the week of June 13 in Champaign, Illinois.
AALL members can register at the reduced rate of $976 for two graduate credits. To register, contact Marianne Steadley at 217/244-2751, or e-mail Stephanie Davidson with course-related questions.
Apply Now for Research Grants
Research grants totaling up to $1,425 are available through the AALL Research Fund established by LexisNexis. The AALL Research and Publications Committee will award one or more grants to library professionals who wish to conduct research supporting the research/scholarly agenda of the librarianship profession.
The AALL Research Agenda offers suggestions for possible research projects covering a wide segment of professional interest, including the profession of law librarianship, law library patrons, law library services, and many other areas. AALL Annual Meeting/Workshop Grants
Time is running out to apply for an AALL registration grant! If you want to attend the Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C., don't miss out on your chance—apply by Wednesday, April 1.
Grants are awarded to cover registration costs for the Annual Meeting or pre-conference workshops presented. Two categories of registration grants are available:
- Experienced Members (five or more years) who have a proven record of professional accomplishment and service to AALL; or
- Students/New Members (less than five years of professional experience) who hold promise of future involvement in AALL and the law library profession.

Morris L. Cohen Student Essay Competition Deadline April 15
The Legal History and Rare Books Special Interest Section, in cooperation with Gale Cengage Learning, is holding the first annual Morris L. Cohen Student Essay Competition. Currently enrolled students attending accredited graduate programs in library science, law, history, or related subjects are eligible to enter the competition. Students may be enrolled either full or part time. The winner will receive $500 and up to $1,000 to fund a trip to the 2009 AALL Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C. Papers must be submitted by April 15; the winner will be announced by May 15.
Take the Lead: AALL Leadership Academy October 16-17
New law librarians in the early stages of their careers can get out in front in the profession by attending the AALL Leadership Academy, October 16-17. The academy program will develop and train law librarians for leadership roles by equipping them with the strategies and techniques needed to achieve success and professional excellence.
The program will feature speaker Dr. Barbara Mackoff, leadership educator and widely-acclaimed expert in understanding the way leaders think. Her presentations involve each participant in identifying the foundations of his or her unique potential and learning to respond to the challenges of change. She is the author of five books, has been featured on "The Today Show" and "All Things Considered," as well as in The New York Times, USA Today, and the Washington Post, and was a keynote speaker for the Special Libraries Association.

Nancy P. Johnson, law librarian and professor of law at the Georgia State University College of Law Library, made it into the Social Science Research Network's (SSRN) top 10. Her article, "Best Practices: What First Year Law Students Should Learn in a Legal Research Class," ranked fourth in the number of downloads since January 2009 in the legal studies category.

AALL Headquarters is Moving
As of June 1, AALL will move its Headquarters office just a few blocks away to the Clark and Adams building in downtown Chicago. The move is an effort to reduce office rental expense, while also increasing our office efficiency. Though smaller, the new office will comprise an entire floor designed to meet AALL's specific needs. The new space will also include a conference room where AALL can host committee and other meetings previously hosted off-site, saving additional AALL resources.
As of June 1, AALL's new address will be 105 W Adams, 33rd Floor, Chicago, IL 60603. If you're in Chicago this summer, we hope you'll stop by and see the new digs.
