AALL President Steven P. AndersonJudging from the emails about student, associate, and law clerk training that I've been noticing this past week, it looks like fall is already upon us. It's a busy time of year for members, and AALL is planning several events and initiatives that may help you improve your services to your libraries' users.

For example, you might get ready to apply for the 2014 Leadership Academy, read an article in the "For the Leader in You" section below, or view the AALL2go Pick of the Month at your convenience and on your schedule. You also may suggest ideas for webinars or apply for a Continuing Education Grant to fund a local program. If you have an interest in law practice management, you might wish to note that AALL members will receive registration discounts for the upcoming Legal Marketing Association P3 Conference.

AALL is looking to members' long-term needs, as well. AALL's Government Relations Office plays a vital role in monitoring information policy and advocating on behalf of libraries, but it relies on members to be an active part of these discussions. Consider taking the opportunity to meet your local legislator during the "August Recess." The CLE and Practice-Oriented Education and Publication Task Force will be examining law librarians' efforts in providing continuing legal education and related activities - a new and growing area of responsibility of AALL members from all types of libraries. The task force's report will suggest ways in which law librarians can build upon this expanding role in the future.

The CLE and Practice-Oriented Education and Publication Task Force Needs Your Help!

A new task force, the CLE and Practice-Oriented Education and Publication Task Force, is looking at ways that law librarians are involved (or can be more involved) in practice-oriented education and publication. They are interested in hearing from librarians at all types of law libraries who are involved in or know about practice-oriented programs and projects, such as the following:

  • Hosting CLE programs at your library
  • Presenting at CLE programs hosted by vendors or other organizations
  • Training students enrolled in law school clinical programs
  • Supervising or training law students in internship/externship/clerkship placements
  • Writing articles for practitioner publications like bar association journals or newsletters
  • Hosting or presenting at pro se clinics
  • Creating and maintaining online portals (forms, checklists, general info) for self-represented litigants.

If you are involved in or know about any of these kinds of programs, please contact Committee Chair Jane Larrington. The committee would like to hear as much detail as possible about such programs, including any program partners, how it got started, how often it's offered, how much it costs and how it is funded, the response it has received, etc. Additionally, if you have ideas for programs that don't yet exist, please send those in, too.

Ultimately, the goal of the task force is to develop a forum for us to share information about these types of programs and how to get them running. We welcome your suggestions about how to best share these ideas. Finally, if you have ideas of other organizations the task force should contact or listservs it should post to as it tries to gather this information, please speak up!

AALL Research Agenda 2013-2016

At the July 2013 Executive Board meeting, the Research and Publications Committee submitted a newly revised AALL Research Agenda for approval. When revising the agenda, the committee took into consideration AALL's 2013-2016 Strategic Directions. During the meeting, the board approved the 2013-2016 Research Agenda, which is now available on AALLNET. The committee will continue to revise the agenda every three years.

August Recess Provides Opportunity to Meet with your Members of Congress

Your members of Congress have headed home for the annual District Work Period from August 3 through September 6. Throughout the "August Recess," as this break is known, legislators will be spending time in their districts and states, talking with constituents and hearing the concerns of voters. Take advantage of this great opportunity! Invite your legislators to tour your library, and tell them about the need for adequate funding for your public or depository library. Meet with your representative to urge him or her to support access to congressionally mandated reports. Attend a town hall meeting and talk to your senator about the need to end "secret law."

As Tip O'Neill said, "All politics is local," and now is the perfect time to use local proximity to build relationships with your members of Congress at home! See the Government Relations Office's (GRO's) recent online training PowerPoint presentation and recording on recess advocacy, or contact the GRO staff for help getting started.

AALL Leadership Academy - Lead with Authority

Plan to attend the AALL Leadership Academy April 4-5, 2014, where you can train for leadership roles by discovering how to build your personal leadership style while networking with other like-minded legal information professionals. The academy will be held at the Hyatt Lodge in Oakbrook, Illinois. Applications for the academy will be accepted beginning September 5.

In the meantime, take a careful look at the criteria and begin to draft important elements to be included in your application. You also should request two recommendations from law library professionals who know your work and can sing your praises.

Webinar Registration Open: The Role of Librarians as Strategic Partners in the Business/Practice of Law

The role of the librarian is constantly changing and evolving. Librarians have a broad understanding of the business of law and a unique understanding of the practice groups that work within the firm. This understanding places librarians in the best position to become strategic business partners within law firms. Please join Director of Knowledge Management Sean Luman and Research Librarian Natalie Lira of Bracewell & Giuliani LLP on September 18 at 11 a.m. (CDT) for The Role of Librarians as Strategic Partners in the Business/Practice of Law. Luman and Lira will discuss the ways that librarians can help effectuate law firm business strategies and increase revenue by expanding work product and bridging knowledge and skillsets within various departments. Learn how to help impact the bottom line and top line, foster attorney productivity and efficiency, assist with cost management, and sell this new role to management.

Additionally, there's still time to register for Principles and Practices for Digital Preservation, which will be held August 29 at 11 a.m. (CDT). Please join Fang Wang, reference and special collection services librarian at St. Mary's University School of Law and certified Digital Preservation Outreach and Education Trainer, for this webinar, where she will outline six principles and practices for preserving digital materials. Learn answers to questions about preserving legal information in the digital format, steps to protect your digital content, and provisions for long-term access and management. The Legal Information Preservation Alliance is a co-sponsor of this webinar. Registration closes August 26.

Members with an interest in developing virtual educational programming are encouraged to propose webinars at any time throughout the year. It is a great way to increase professional visibility, add new skills, and contribute to the profession. Proposals must address issues, raise important questions, solve problems, or provide practical knowledge and innovative approaches that deliver results. Do you have a great idea or an excellent speaker in mind for a program? Apply for an AALL/Bloomberg Continuing Education Grant today! The next deadline for grant proposals is September 12. Join the many colleagues and AALL entities that have received funding to support programming.

Summer 2013 Law Library Journal Available

The Summer 2013 issue of Law Library Journal is now available and was mailed to members yesterday. The issue features articles on how academic law libraries can provide possible solutions to the crisis in legal education; resources to begin the study of Jewish Law in Conservative Judaism; issues and trends in collection development for East Asian legal materials; and suggestions for incorporating academic support services with library services.

Marty Jones, senior research editor for Fortune and formerly corporate specialist librarian at Willke Farr & Gallagher in New York, has received praise for his accomplishments in the August 12 issue of Fortune.

Steve Lastres, director of library and knowledge management at Debevoise & Plimpton LLP in New York, received the International Legal Technology Association's (ILTA's) Best Member-Contributed White Paper Article of the Year award for his article, "Knowledge Management: A Strategic Role Change for Legal Information Professionals," published in the AALL/ILTA digital white paper, The New Librarian. Lastres also was recently profiled in ALM's Law Technology News.

Immediate Past President Jean M. Wenger, government documents/foreign and international law librarian at Cook County Law Library in Chicago, was congratulated and recognized with a resolution in her honor by the Cook County Board of Commissioners for her service on AALL's Executive Board and as AALL president for 2012-1013. The resolution was read and presented to Wenger at the Cook County Board of Commissioners meeting on July 31.

Courtney L. Selby, associate dean for information systems, director of the law library, and associate professor of law at Hofstra University Law School in Hempstead, New York, has been recognized by The National LGBT Bar Association as one of the 2013 Best LGBT Lawyers Under 40. Each year, the LGBT Bar recognizes 40 LGBT legal professionals under the age of 40 who have distinguished themselves in their field and demonstrated a profound commitment to LGBT equality.
