Happy Halloween, or should I say, "Be careful what you witch for?" This e-newsletter highlights many opportunities for you to participate in your Association.

First and most important, VOTE! This is your chance to make a difference by selecting the newest members of the AALL Executive Board.

Second, COMPLETE THE SURVEY! This is your opportunity to let us know what is working and what is not. The survey includes questions on the Annual Meeting (including why members choose not to attend), which will be included in our planning for changes for the meeting going forward.

Third, GET INVOLVED! Volunteer for the Annual Meeting Program Committee; work at the state level to implement Uniform Electronic Legal Material Act; participate in the Futures Summit by tweeting, blogging, or viewing the live-streamed portion; write a paper for Call for Papers; donate to your Association; or watch a webinar with your colleagues.

Finally, KEEP TALKING! I need to hear from you, and so do your colleagues. Share your thoughts on community lists, blogs, or email. Let's learn, connect, and grow together.

AALL Online Election Opens November 1

It's time to vote for the next AALL vice president and Executive Board members. AALL needs people on its Executive Board who represent the interests of all our members, so I strongly encourage you to vote.

Polls open on Tuesday, November 1. Online voting is fast and easy, but members who wish to receive a paper ballot may do so upon request to Hannah Phelps, AALL membership services coordinator, 312/205-8022. Paper ballots must be requested by October 26.

Election schedule:

November 1: Ballots distributed electronically to all voting members.

December 1: Deadline for receipt of all ballots, both electronic and paper, at AALL Headquarters. Ballots will be tabulated at AALL, and the results will be announced once the candidates have been notified.

Tell Us What You Think of AALL

Last Tuesday AALL emailed you a link to a comprehensive member survey. The goal of the survey is to get members' candid opinions about AALL and its programs and services. It should take you no more than 15 minutes to complete, and your responses will be kept confidential. As a thank you for your help, your name will be entered in a drawing for a $100 American Express gift card, if you complete your survey by October 31.

Uniform Law Commission Releases Final Uniform Electronic Legal Material Act

The Uniform Law Commission (ULC) released its final version of the Uniform Electronic Legal Material Act ( UELMA ) on October 4. This updates the text approved by ULC at its annual meeting in July and includes a prefatory note and comments.

UELMA requires that, when legal material is published in an electronic format only, the material must be designated as official. States must also ensure that official electronic legal material is authenticated, preserved, and made permanently available to the public. AALL will now work on enactment of UELMA at the state level.

AALL Launches New Legislative Action Center

AALL's new Legislative Action Center makes it easier than ever before to send personalized messages to your Congress members on issues that matter to you; look up biographical and other information about your elected officials (including whether they have a JD); and share our alerts with friends and colleagues through email or social media.

Please use our Legislative Action Center to respond to our alert in support of funding for the Government Printing Office (GPO). Congress recently passed a continuing resolution to keep the government funded through November 18, giving you another opportunity to make your voice heard. Your Congress members need to know why funding for GPO - especially FDsys and the Federal Depository Library Program - is important to you. Letters to all senators and representatives on the House Legislative Branch Appropriations Subcommittee are urgently needed. Thank you to those of you who have already taken action.

Volunteer for the AALL Annual Meeting Program Committee by Nov. 1

AALL is now accepting applications for the 2012-2013 Annual Meeting Program Committee (AMPC). The committee has the opportunity to help set the stage for the premier educational event for our members, the 2013 Annual Meeting in Seattle. Information about the work of the AMPC is available on the committee profile.

Please submit your application by November 1. Your participation and efforts will ensure a successful and enriching member experience. Note: The committee volunteer form for all other AALL committees will open on February 1.

What is the Future of Our Profession?

The AALL Futures Summit will be held in just a few short weeks on November 3-4. We have set up an online Futures Summit community for all members to use to participate in the discussion. Join the committee by first logging onto AALLNET. The summit planning committee will post questions about the future to gain member insight prior to the summit. In addition the keynote speaker Andy Hines, executive-in-residence at the University of Houston's Graduate Program in Future Studies, will have his remarks live streamed for members to view.

2011 AALL Salary Survey Results Are In

The 2011 AALL Biennial Salary Survey and Organizational Characteristics is now available online free for AALL members. With a response rate of 57.6 percent, the AALL survey is the only source for up-to-date comparative salary information for law librarians, broken out (and cross-tabbed) by position, region, education, and years of library experience. In trying economic times like these, rely on the AALL Salary Survey as an essential tool to preserve fair and equitable compensation for law librarians.

Print copies are also available for order and will be delivered in November.



 Vendor Relations Activities

I recently established two task forces to begin implementing two of the recommendations contained in the Vendor Colloquium action plan. The Guide to Fair Business Practices for Legal Publishers Revisions Task Force will be chaired by Kay Todd, and the Library Procurement Process Improvement Task Force will be co-chaired by Katherine Lowry and Tracy Thompson Przylucki.

The first issue of the new Vendor Liaison Update E-Newsletter was sent to members on October 12. Vendor Liaison Margaret Maes is the editor.

The 2011-2012 AALL Membership Directory mailed out to AALL members in early October. You can expect to receive your copy in the next couple of weeks.  AALL2go Pick of the Month

AALL's Continuing Professional Education Committee presents the AALL2go pick of the month: Teaching and Using Legal Classics: Black Letter Law and the Google Generation.

This hour-long audio file recorded at the 2007 Northeast Regional Law Libraries Meeting in Toronto features two speakers who are actively involved in teaching legal research. Both speakers try to give the audience a sense of how law students may expect to obtain easy answers to legal issues because they are used to finding "the answer" using Google and other technology, yet the black letter law may be more difficult to find...if it even exists.

Shelley W. Obal, a research partner at Toronto law firm Osler, Hoskin & Harcourt LLP, focuses on legal research using expert resources in a law firm setting and tells her law students and new attorneys to begin research with secondary sources before moving online for primary sources.

Next Alison Harvison Young, judge on the Superior Court of Justice of Ontario and former law dean at Queen's University, uses her experiences in academia and on the bench to provide examples of real world research skills in practice, both good and bad. She also briefly describes the civil law versus common law systems and how the research methods in each system may be a bit different.

The remainder of the program contains a question and answer session hosted by moderator John Sadler from the University of Western Ontario law library.

Call for Nominations for AALL Distinguished Lectureship Award

The AALL Research and Publications Committee is looking for nominations for the AALL Distinguished Lectureship Award. This award is an opportunity for members with a unique perspective on the history, practice, or philosophy of law librarianship to share their knowledge and expertise with other members in a prestigious setting. The lecture, which can be on a topic of the individual's own choosing, will be presented at the Annual Meeting and published in Law Library Journal. The award winner will receive $500. Nominations are due by November 1.

The Call for Papers Has Begun

Have you been thinking of writing an article of interest to law librarians? The AALL/LexisNexis Call for Papers Committee has just the incentive to get started. The committee is soliciting articles in four categories.

Open Division: For active and retired AALL members and law librarians with five or more years of professional experience.

New Members Division: For recent graduates and AALL members who have been in the profession for less than five years.

Short Form Division: for all AALL members. Articles in this category will be shorter than a traditional scholarly article and appropriate for publication in AALL Spectrum, a bar journal, or a chapter or special interest section newsletter.

Student Division: For students in library, information management, or law school. Participants in this division need not be members of AALL. To submit in this category, you must have been enrolled in law school or in a library school, information management, or equivalent program either in the fall 2011 or spring 2012 semester.

Submissions in the Open, New Members, and Short Form Divisions must be submitted by March 1. Articles in the Student Division must be submitted by May 15.

The winners in the Open, New Member, and Student Divisions will receive $650, and the Short Form winner will receive $300, generously donated by LexisNexis. They also have the opportunity to present the winning paper at a program at the 2012 AALL Annual Meeting in Boston. Winning papers in the Open, New Member, and Student Divisions are also considered for publication in Law Library Journal.

AALL Spectrum Correction

In the September/October 2011 issue on page six, Jacquelyn (Jackie) Jurkins was incorrectly identified as receiving the AALL Hall of Fame Award posthumously. Anne Grande received the award posthumously. AALL Spectrum regrets the error.

Member News

Sara Sampson is the new deputy director of the law library and clinical assistant professor of law at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She was previously the head of reference at Georgetown University Law Library.

Jennifer L. Wondracek, instructional services reference librarian at Lawton Chiles Legal Information Center at the University of Florida, received the first Academic Law Libraries Special Interest Section AALL Leadership Academy Grant.

Memorials

AALL has been advised of the death of Catherine E. Mealey.

Ms. Mealey was born April 4, 1928, in Ames, Iowa. She last held the position of law librarian at the University of Wyoming Law Library. She died on February 11, 2011, at the age of 82.

AALL Headquarters Staff News

Emily Feltren was recently appointed interim director of the Government Relations Office as we conduct a search for a new director. Former director of the office, Julie Strandlie, left AALL earlier this month. Emily serves as AALL's advocacy communications assistant and has been a member of the AALL staff since November 2007. She has also been the lead staff person for AALL's efforts to create a national inventory of legal materials.

Ashley St. John will join AALL's staff next week on October 24 as marketing and communications manager. Ashley will be responsible for coordinating and producing all AALL publications, including AALL Spectrum, Law Library Journal, the AALL e-newsletter, the annual Membership Directory, and the biennial Salary Survey.
