Joyce Manna JantoJune is a strange month for AALL. It is at once the first and last month of the year. It is the first month of our membership year and the last month of our Association year. The AALL membership year begins June 1, and if you haven't renewed your membership, there is still time to do so. Reminder notices mailed out this week to those who have not yet renewed. Renew now and don't risk missing any important AALL news and benefits.

The Annual Meeting, which marks the beginning and the end of the Association year, is just around the corner. This month's e-newsletter contains information about which of the programs will be streamed live, the Annual Meeting Coffee Talks, and the Annual Meeting Business Meeting and Open Forum. Remember – this year you can submit questions in advance for the forum and be guaranteed an answer. While every effort will be made to give a full answer to questions asked for the first time at the forum, we cannot guarantee a full answer at that time. So, beat the rush and submit your question today!

Finally, it is my sad duty to notify you about the deaths of three of our colleagues Alan Diefenbach formerly of the Cornell, Harvard, and Barry Law Libraries; Lori Bull Dodds, head of the Curtis B. Henderson Law Library of Collin County Texas; and William Wleklinski, curator at the John Marshall Law School in Chicago.

Last Chance to Unleash Your Inner Leader--Apply for the AALL Leadership Academy by June 30

New law librarians in the early stages of your career - achieve your leadership potential by attending the 2011 AALL Leadership Academy, October 28-29, in Oak Brook, Illinois. Designed as an intensive learning experience aimed at growing and developing leadership skills, the academy program will help you discover how to maximize your personal leadership style while connecting with other legal information professionals.

The program will feature speakers Gail Johnson and Pam Parr. Johnson is a widely regarded leadership and communications expert and holds a Master of Arts in Communication Studies. Parr has extensive business management and customer service expertise. They have conducted many leadership programs for library organizations and will speak at the 2011 American Library Association Annual Conference.

Share Your Comments on the New Vendor Relations Community Page

The working group, formed as a result of the recent AALL Vendor Colloquium, "Creating, Disseminating, Using, and Preserving Legal Information in Challenging Times," has completed refining the shared principles developed and agreed to at the colloquium and with drafting an action plan to ensure the principles are enacted. Both documents are now available on the Vendor Colloquium page on AALLNET.

We are now seeking member comments on the action plan, which can be submitted using the Vendor Relations community page on AALLNET. Members can also submit their comments directly to AALL Vendor Liaison Margie Maes at mmaes@aall.org.

The Committee on Relations with Information Vendors (CRIV) will also host a roundtable discussion on the shared principles and action plan during the Annual Meeting in Philadelphia. The roundtable is scheduled for Monday, July 25, from 12-1:15 p.m.

My Communities Privacy Settings

I hope you've had an opportunity to explore the new My Communities section of the new AALLNET and connect with other AALL members. AALL plans to provide you with information and tips about the new My Communities section; this month we want to focus on your privacy settings.

You can control who can see what on your My Communities profile by clicking on "My Profile" and then "My Privacy Settings" on the left-hand side. From there you will have the opportunity to select who can see various components of your "social networking" profile, such as your photo, address, and phone number. You can choose between the following privacy options: My Contacts, Members Only, Public, and Nobody. Please note that by default, your address, phone numbers, and email address are hidden from your My Communities profile, and you may opt to share this information at your own discretion.

We hope you're finding the new AALLNET and My Communities section easy to use and full of helpful resources. Please let us know how we can continue to improve the services we provide to you.

June 17 Annual Meeting Registration Deadlines

As you plan your Annual Meeting activities, don't forget the June 17 registration deadline for any pre-conference workshops, SIS ticketed meal events, and the Legislative Advocacy Training. Space is limited, and some events are already full. If you need to add any items to your current registration, just call Convention Data Services at 508/734-8524.

Annual Meeting Coffee Talks

To keep the conversation flowing in Philadelphia, informal "Coffee Talk" discussions will be held on Tuesday morning from 8-8:45 a.m. Got a burning question you'd like to ask? Maybe you'd like to pick your colleagues' brains about a new innovation. Wondering if anybody has dealt with the same situation you find yourself in now? We're looking for great table topics to keep you buzzing all day. Send your ideas to annualmeeting@aall.org and stay tuned for more details closer to the Annual Meeting.

AALL Business Meeting in Philadelphia

The AALL Business Meeting will be held during the Annual Meeting in Philadelphia on July 25, beginning at 3:45 p.m. It will be followed immediately by the Members' Open Forum, which will adjourn no later than 5:30 p.m.

Any member who wants to submit a resolution for consideration by the membership at the Business Meeting must do so no later than July 1. Resolutions can be submitted by any AALL entity or member concerning substantive matters for consideration by the membership.

During this year's Members' Open Forum, which immediately follows the Annual Business Meeting, the AALL president and other officers will be available to respond to member questions regarding AALL and its programs and activities. In addition to accepting questions from the floor, members can submit questions in advance of the meeting.

Save the Date: Aug 17 Learn to Create Effective Employee Manuals

Your staff procedure manual and staff policy manual provide the foundation for good communication throughout your organization. Join Holly Ann Lakatos, law librarian at the California Court of Appeal - 3rd District, for the August 17 AALL webinar, Documenting Your Success: Creating Employee Manuals, at 11 a.m. CST, and learn how to maximize this important documentation in your library. Topics will include: workflow descriptions, policy alignment, consistency, and specific language for difficult problems.

Watch the Newest PLL Video: Creating Successful Training Programs in Today's Law Firm

The Private Law Libraries Special Interest Section program, The Legal Learning Challenge: Creating Successful Training Programs in Today's Law Firm Environment, is now available on AALL's YouTube Channel and will soon be available on AALL2go.

This program can be shared with chapters, library staff, or other departments if viewed in a group with an AALL member. Arranging a viewing is a nice way to provide no-cost training to your staff or share thoughts with another department. You can use the discussion guide that was prepared for this program as a way to get your group discussion going.

Advance Your Career with AALL's Placement Office

The AALL Placement Office offers online job and candidate searching during the Annual Meeting in Philadelphia. Posting through the AALL Career Center means you don't have to be in the Placement Office--you don't even have to be in Philadelphia--to take part in the action. The Placement Office also posts job listings on bulletin boards, provides resume drop-off folders for each position available, offers instruction for using the online Career Center, and provides limited space for interviews. Interview rooms can be scheduled through the Placement Office. Contact AALL Membership Services Coordinator Hannah Phelps by July 21 to reserve interview rooms in advance.

Job seekers can post their resumes online at any time, and resume posting and job searching is free for job seekers. For employers, we offer a special 10-day package on the Career Center during the conference at a rate of $50 for AALL members. This package may be purchased starting July 18. Alternatively, employers can purchase 30- or 60-day packages at the regular Career Center rates.

Be sure to add "AM2011" to your job posting title if you plan to be in Philadelphia for the AALL conference, and include "interviewing at conference" to the job description.

Congress Extends USA PATRIOT Act without Reform

On May 26, just before the three USA PATRIOT Act provisions – including Section 215 (the "library provision") - were set to expire, Congress passed a bill to renew the provisions for four years with no reforms. The measure passed with little debate by a vote of 72-23 in the Senate and 250-153 in the House. Because of the importance of this issue to the library community, AALL sent an Action Alert to all AALL members and chapters urging everyone to contact their members of Congress. Thank you to everyone who called their Congress members in support of additional protections for libraries.

AALL will now send a letter to each senator and representative who voted "no" on the bill to thank them for standing up for privacy and civil liberties. If your senators or representative voted "no," they need to hear from you, as a constituent. Please send them a personal letter to thank them. If you need contact information for your members of Congress, pleaselet us know.

AALL will continue to work for passage of reforms to balance the government's interest in protecting national security with defending the constitutional rights of Americans. On May 26, Senator Leahy introduced a stand-alone bill, S. 1125, to make improvements to Section 215 and the National Security Letters provision. We are helping Senator Leahy gather co-sponsors and pass his bill, and we will call on you in the coming months to educate your senators (and representatives) on the importance of reform.

It's not too soon to start thinking about programming at next year's Annual Meeting. The 2012 Call for Proposals has been announced, and the 2012 Annual Meeting Program Committee wants to hear from you. Check out the new Annual Meeting Program Ideas online community to share ideas about programs you'd like to see in Boston or to get inspired by someone else's idea.

AALL Connects with Legal Administrators

Last month AALL Representative to the Association of Legal Administrators (ALA) Monice Kaczorowski, director of library services at Neal, Gerber & Eisenberg LLP in Chicago, and AALL Director of Membership Marketing and Communications Julia O'Donnell attended the Association of Legal Administrators Annual Conference in Orlando. They staffed a booth in the exhibit hall where they talked to ALA members about their library and legal research needs. They also educated the legal administrators about the expanding roles that legal information professionals are taking on in law firms. Kaczorowski and O'Donnell also participated in a speed networking session where they met with small groups of ALA members and were able to ask questions about their challenges and discuss how law librarians can add value to their firms. Kaczorowski and O'Donnell plan to follow-up with AALL and ALA members to educate both groups on the expanding roles of law librarians.

AALL2go Pick of the Month

AALL's Continuing Professional Education Committee presents the AALL2go pick of the month: Why Don't I Get Easy Questions Anymore?: The Changing Nature of Reference and Patron Services.

This one-hour MP3 recording features Kay Samuels as the moderator and Joan Shear and Jeanette Bosschart as speakers. During the program the speakers discuss how they receive fewer easy reference questions than in the past but that the questions they get are of a different nature. Reference questions can cross practice areas, deal with complex procedural issues, or include foreign law. Reference questions are also harder because researchers ask more "raw, undigested" questions. These are questions the researcher has not thought out and therefore cannot provide structure or context for. Both also note that there are some new "easy" reference questions, which have to do with patrons doing research using online sources, such as "Why can't I find this law review in Westlaw or Lexis?" when the patron is in a case law database. Easy user questions are now more about the limitations of online database content.

Both speakers also acknowledge that patrons' expectations have changed. Researchers expect results quickly, in full-text, and in electronic format. If the research involves foreign law there is also an expectation that the information will be in English. Finally, both note that researchers do not have any expectations regarding quality or authority of the results they find.

The discussion ends with a look at how technology has taken researchers out of the library and the challenges both speakers' libraries face in trying to reach the patrons who need them. Both commented on the technological challenges of the reference interview challenges when the interaction is not face-to-face and certain cues that were evident now have to be extracted through an online interaction. The program ends with members of the audience providing comments or asking questions of the speakers.

Member News

Elizabeth G. Adelman, associate director and head of collection management at the University At Buffalo State University of New York (SUNY) Law Library, received the SUNY Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Librarianship. The award honors "skill in librarianship; service to the campus, the university and to the field; scholarship and professional growth; and major professional achievements."

Femi Cadmus, associate director for administration at Yale Law School Lillian Goldman Library ,will be the new director of the Cornell University Law Library. Her appointment begins in late August, and Pat Court, associate law library, lecturer in law at Cornell, will serve as interim director until then.

Phill Johnson has been named associate dean for information services at the Barry University Dwayne O. Andreas School of Law in Orlando. Johnson joins Barry Law School from University of Missouri – Kansas City School of Law where he served as associate director of the law library and director of electronic services and communications since 2004.

Susan Nevelow Mart has been named director of the William A. Wise Law Library at the University of Colorado Law School. Her appointment is effective in mid-July. Mart most recently was the faculty services librarian at the University of California Hastings College of Law.

Sara Sonet, research librarian at the U.S. Supreme Court Law Library, is this year's Roy M. Mersky Spirit of Law Librarianship Award winner. Sonet's 12 years of service to the Washington Special Hockey program has enriched the lives of many children and adults with special needs and has helped the program grow into one of the finest in the nation.

The San Diego County Public Law Library celebrated its 120th anniversary June 10. Congratulations!

Memorials

AALL has been advised of the deaths of Alan Diefenbach, Lori Bull Dodds, and William Wleklinski.

Mr. Diefenbach worked for many years at the Cornell, Harvard, and Barry Law Libraries and was a true gentleman and scholar. He was an active AALL member since 1970 and will be greatly missed by his many friends.

Ms. Dodds was director of the Curtis B. Henderson Law Library of Collin County Texas. She was a member of the State, Court, and County Law Libraries Special Interest Section Committee on Pro Bono Partnerships. She was also on the Texas Access to Justice Commission's Services to Pro Se Litigants Committee's Self-Help Center Subcommittee. Ms. Dodds died on June 11.

Mr. Wleklinski passed away peacefully on January 18, 2011, at the age of 62 after a five-year battle with cancer. He was a long-time Chicago Association of Law Libraries member while he worked at the library of The John Marshall Law School. He served as head of reference and as curator in later years. Mr. Wleklinski also authored A Centennial History of the John Marshall Law School in 1999. He was a graduate summa cum laude of Wabash College (which he proudly liked to remind his colleagues is one of the few remaining all-men's liberal arts colleges). He also had a JD from Northwestern Law School and a M.A. in Library Science from Dominican. Mr. Wleklinski's friends will always remember him for his fine mind, his witty remarks, his strong opinions, and his ability to write a great email (his written reports after attending the AALL Annual Meeting are legendary).
