AALL E-newsletter - December 2010

PrintEmail

Joyce Manna JantoWhile the holiday season is just around the corner, the AALL e-newsletter is looking forward to the New Year and the opportunities it will bring. First and most importantly is the opportunity to nominate a deserving colleague, a library, or a company for one of the awards that AALL will present at the 2011 Annual Meeting in Philadelphia. The deadline for all award nominations is February 1. Other upcoming opportunities include the AALL Management Institute and the Legal Marketing Association (LMA) Annual Conference. This year we have negotiated with LMA for our members to attend its conference at the LMA member rate. Finally, still looking for that perfect gift for your boss or staff? AALL has now made it possible to donate to the Association in honor of someone. So instead of another coffee mug, give the gift of giving.

Price Index Review Task Force Appointed

A task force to review the AALL Price Index for Legal Publications has been appointed and will be chaired by Merle Slyhoff. The purpose of the task force is to review the index and recommend to the Executive Board any necessary changes to the publication. The task force will investigate all aspects of the index including its value to members. The task force has been asked to submit a final report and recommendations for the July 2011 Executive Board meeting.

CRIV Tip of the Month

Part of the mission of the Committee on Relations with Information Vendors (CRIV) is to handle requests for assistance with vendor issues from librarians. The following are a few guidelines to help understand the types of issues CRIV can and cannot address.

  1. The issue must involve an AALL member librarian and a vendor of legal information.
  2. The issue must affect similarly situated libraries and not be an issue solely affecting one library. (On this point, CRIV will provide suggestions to a librarian on how to work with the publisher to resolve the issue, but CRIV will not pursue the issue on the librarian's behalf.)
  3. The issue must not be one solely involving the cost of a product. CRIV does not get involved with issues of pricing due to antitrust and other laws.
  4. The AALL Guide to Fair Business Practices for Legal Publishers is a great resource to assist you with identifying problems.

If you need assistance working with a vendor, please see CRIV's Request for Assistance page.

AALL2go Pick of the Month

AALL's Continuing Professional Education Committee presents the AALL2go pick of the month: In PKI We Trust: Authenticating Our Future.

AALL2goFor online legal material information to be deemed trustworthy, the researcher must feel confident that it is authentic and accurate. But how do you know? This 60-minute MP3 recording features two experts—one on the portable document format (PDF) technology and a second from the federal government. The first speaker is Dr. James King, senior principal scientist and PDF Platform Architect at Adobe Systems Inc., who discusses the mechanics of public key infrastructure (PKI). Specifically, King explains how a PDF document can be encrypted to ensure authenticity and accuracy and further to allow for limited viewing only by intended audiences. The second speaker, Michael Wash, is chief information officer of the U.S. Government Printing Office. Wash discusses the Federal Depository System (FDSys) platform, which will be completed in 2010 and will replace GPO Access at the end of the year.

Give the Gift of Opportunity

AALL Giving OpportunitiesDuring this time of year as we hunt for the perfect gifts for family and friends, consider giving a tax-deductible gift donation in honor of a deserving member of the law librarian profession through one of AALL's many funds. AALL's scholarships and grants allow members to attend an AALL Annual Meeting, go to library or law school, or participate in a workshop. This education and participation in turn makes our profession stronger.

On AALLNET you'll find a list of giving options along with instructions for making your contribution in honor of a colleague in the profession. The Association is grateful for the generosity of our members and the resulting benefits to our profession.

AALL Committee Appointments

The Appointments Committee, chaired by Vice President/President-Elect Darcy Kirk, will meet January 28-29 in Chicago to select the new vice chairs and committee members for 2011-2012. Everyone who volunteered for a committee will be notified regarding his or her appointments by mid-February. If you have any questions regarding your committee volunteer form, please contact Kim Rundle.

Headquarters Closed for Holidays

AALL Headquarters and the Government Relations Office will be closed during the holiday season from December 24 to January 2. The offices will reopen on Monday, January 3.
