American Airlines Discount Travel Code Update
AALL’s travel partner, Innovative Travel, has recently partnered with American Airlines to offer our Annual Meeting and Conference attendees an even greater discount than was previously published. When making your travel reservations with American Airlines or through the travel desk at Innovation Travel (800/447-6064), use the code A1178AS to secure a 9 percent (if booked 60 days in advance) or a 5 percent discount on your flight. The previously published code, 3748AA, is invalid.
Registration and Housing
AALL registration and housing have both officially opened, and members now have the opportunity to conveniently register online or download a form to fax or mail in to Ambassadors (housing desk) and Convention Data Services (registration desk). New this year, you can go online to review your registration, add new events or courses, or get another confirmation or receipt. To login, you will need your badge number that was provided on your initial registration confirmation.
Are you required to procure a purchase order or check from your institution to attend the Annual Meeting and Conference? If so, we advise you to start your request as soon as possible, especially if you are interested in attending one of the several pre-conference workshops offered (registration deadline is June 6). Workshop attendance is limited and offered on a first-come first-serve basis. Please do not schedule early flights to attend workshops until you have received a registration confirmation verifying your enrollment.*
*AALL reserves the right to cancel workshops, programs, and events if there is insufficient registration or for any other reason. AALL is not responsible for cancellation charges assessed by airlines or travel agencies or other losses incurred due to cancellation of workshops, programs, and events.
Reminder: Grant Application Deadlines in Early April
AALL and its special interest sections (SISs) and affiliated chapters award deserving law librarians with grants to attend the Annual Meeting. Grant awards from AALL or SISs are made directly from AALL Headquarters. Chapter grants are awarded through individual chapters. The Association also awards scholarships for studies related to law librarianship.
If you would like to review the opportunities and applications for grants or scholarships, visit the above links. Please note that most deadlines are during the month of April.
Library Tours
Library tours will be offered that showcase the different kinds of Portland libraries—private law firm libraries, court libraries, academic libraries, public libraries, and a bookstore, too. There is no charge for these tours, but advance registration is required. Tours will fill up quickly, so be sure to register early. Walking tours may include use of public transportation and will require up to 15 minutes of walking each way.
The Daily Rose (Portland’s Daily Newspaper and Blog)
Published Sunday through Tuesday, The Daily Rose will keep you informed about the important people, programs, and products of the 2008 Annual Meeting and Conference. If you would like to submit an article, announcement, or news to The Daily Rose, please send an e-mail (MSWord and/or WordPerfect attachments accepted) to Co-Editors Tim Kelly or Meg Martin.
Check out the Daily Rose Blog on the Local Advisory Committee Web site, featuring current announcements, news, photos, informal reports from conference goers, and important items of interest.
A Book for Every Child
The Social Responsibilities SIS is excited to announce the recipient of the 2008 AALL Children’s Book Drive, the Willamette Writers Books for Kids program. This book donation program collects and distributes more than 23,000 new and used books every year to underprivileged children and teenagers served by more than 50 agencies and organizations throughout Portland, Oregon state, and southwest Washington. Its motto is "Every Child Should Have a Book to Call Their Very Own." The recipient agencies are encouraged to give the books to the children.
The types of organizations involved in this program are hospitals, shelters for women and children, literacy programs, alternative schools for homeless youth, and reading mentor programs. Examples include African Children's Libraries, Boys and Girls Clubs, Metro Family Services, Oregon Foster Care, Juvenile Rights Project, Wynne Watts School and Community Transitional School (schools for homeless youth), Volunteer for America chapters, Medford and Phoenix Head Start Programs, and YMCA Kindergarten.
Look for more information on how to donate books, money, or gift cards in future announcements. SR-SIS and AALL continue the tradition of giving something back to the community, hosting our Annual Meeting through this, our 10th annual Children’s Book Drive.
Willamette Writers Inc. is an Oregon non-profit (formed in 1965) providing a creative environment and support system for current and aspiring writers. The Books for Kids program has existed since the early 1990s.
If you have questions about the book drive ("A Book for Every Child"), please
contact one of the members of the SR-SIS Book Drive Team: Jorge Juarez; Ann Hemmens; Courtney Selby.
SIS Council Announces Community Service Projects
The SIS Council will sponsor two community service projects in Portland and invite all attendees to volunteer. Both projects will be held on Saturday, July 12, from 8 a.m.-1 p.m. (includes travel time). Projects will be offered at the Portland Parks and Recreation Community Gardens, where volunteers will participate in invasive species removal (aka, weeding) in Oaks Bottom Wildlife Refuge, located in southeast Portland. The other project will be held at the Oregon Food Bank and Learning Gardens, where volunteers will sort, inspect, and pack fresh food donated by local grocery stores; help repackage frozen food donations into family-sized portions; and repack bulk food, sort canned food, label packages, and complete mailing projects.
Spend a few hours in the community and lend a hand to support our host city. Online registration for these service projects will open soon, and will be announced in the April edition of the Update.
See you in Portland!
