W-4: "So Now You’re Conflicts"/"So Now You’re Docket": The Evolving Law Firm Library Manager

Saturday, July 12 • 12:30 p.m. – 5:30 p.m. (12:00 p.m. check-in)

Level:Advanced; Half day (afternoon)

Competency: Library Management

Target Audience: Private law librarians who have recently been tapped to manage the related information areas of conflicts of interest and/or docket/calendar for their firms; private law librarians who anticipate evolving into administrative managers with greater departmental responsibilities

Learning Outcomes:

  1. Participants will discuss and analyze the requirements and challenges of library department management versus docket/calendar and conflicts department management in a private law firm setting.
  2. Participants will be qualified to develop a plan for managing docket/calendar and conflicts departments from initial set-up to operational efficiency.

Whereas the literature on legal records management has expanded greatly over the past few years, very little has been written on the subject of how docket/calendar and conflicts of interest departments operate in law firms. To a great degree, staff working in these departments—including managers—tend to be internally appointed, or "home grown," and trained on the job with few, if any, opportunities for formal training or instruction. Firm librarians are increasingly being tapped to set up and manage these related information areas; however, many must embark on this adventure clueless as to what’s actually involved. This workshop will provide a unique opportunity to learn from two experts in their respective fields about what it really means to evolve into the role of docket/calendar and conflicts of interest manager.
