Legal Resources on the Internet
 

The following links include some of the most widely used legal research websites.  Many of these go beyond the Virginia orientation of the VALL Web Page, and should provide useful launching points for federal and multistate research.  They were compiled and prepared by Reference Librarian Brandon Quarles of the University of Richmond School of Law as materials for the Legal Resources on the Internet CLE course, presented by the Virginia Poverty Law Center and taught by Mr. Quarles and Ann Walsh Long, Reference Librarian at Hunton & Williams.

Opinions of the Attorney General

Virginia Lawyer's Weekly Online lets you search for any article since 1993, from any Lawyers Weekly paper(s) for free! Print the full-text of articles for $1.95 for subscribers or $4.95 for non-subscribers. The online version is updated weekly and also provides links to recent Virginia Supreme Court and Court of Appeals Decisions.

Virginia State Bar Association  Contact the Virginia State Bar web site to locate Officers, Committees & Boards, Sections & Young Lawyers, Whom to Contact, Staff Directory, Clients' Protection Fund, How to File a Complaint, Publications, Law in Society Contest, Recent Legal Ethics & Unauthorized Practice of Law Opinions and a Lawyer Referral guide.

Virginia CLE  Virginia CLE is a bar supported organization that provides continuing legal education and information to Virginia lawyers. The home page provides a schedule of CLE events including live, video and telephone seminars. This site also provides information on the CLE requirements in Virginia including telephone numbers for checking individual CLE credits and other questions about requirements. The “Other Resources” link leads to primary Virginia legal sources including opinions, legislation and court home pages.

Thomas  Federal legislative information with a searchable database for the full text of bills.

Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) a searchable, full text database of the CFR, current edition.

Federal Register a searchable, full text database of the Federal Register for 1995 - Current (vols. 60 - Current).

GPO Access  Includes the Federal Register, Congressional Record, and the FY97 Budget.

American Law Sources Online (ALSO) a comprehensive, uniform compilation of links to all on-line sources of American law, including uniform laws, law schools, law reviews and periodicals and law-related listservs. Candian and Mexican laws are also included.

FindLaw FindLaw is a good starting point to find law-related information. Links at this site point to a Legal Subject Index, Law Schools and Law Reviews, Professional Development, Legal Associations and Organizations, Law Firms and Lawyers, Consultants and Experts, Laws: Cases and Codes, U.S. Federal Government Resources, State Law Resources, Foreign and International Resources, News and Reference Material, and Legal Practice Information and Materials.

Supreme Court Decisions (1990 - Present) Search by date, topic, or party names. A collection of over 300 of the most important historical decisions of the Court is also available.

Supreme Court Decisions (1937 - 1975) (through FedWorld)  U.S. Supreme Court Decisions from 1937 to 1975. These include decisions from volumes 300 through 422 of the U.S. Reports.

U.S. Federal Courts Finder  Contains a U.S. map of circuit regions and the full text of opinions from all federal courts.

The U.S. House of Representatives Internet Law Library Laws of Other Nations This site provides an alphabetical listing of international laws available on the internet.

Martindale-Hubbell Lawyer Locator Access the Martindale-Hubbell Law Directory and search for information on lawyers or law firms in all 50 states except Iowa.

West’s Legal Directory  Locate information on law firms, government offices, corporate law offices, and lawyers in the U.S. and Canada.

American Bar Association  The American Bar Association home page includes the “ABA Store”, a publications catalog, that is searchable by publication title and by sponsoring ABA section. This site also provides Continuing Legal Education (CLE) information, including the current year calendar of ABA sponsored CLE events.
