Cataloging Librarian, LA Law Library

The LA Law Library seeks a full time Cataloging Librarian. The Cataloging Librarian is responsible for creating and maintaining a current catalog of the Library’s collection which describes the Library’s holdings and provides accurate access for users.

Minimum Qualifications

  • A Master’s degree in Library Science from a school accredited by the American Library Association.
  • 2-3 years previous cataloging experience.
  • Knowledge of current standards, trends, and emerging technologies in cataloging services.
  • Must have experience with digital information resources including online databases and the internet.
  • Significant experience working with bibliographic data bases, utilizing the creation and maintenance features.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Aptitude for complex, analytical, detailed work.
  • Knowledge of basic statistics.
  • Working knowledge with an integrated library system such as Voyager.
  • Ability to work in a team environment with diverse staff and to work closely with the Head of Cataloging to achieve the Department’s goals.
  • Ability to plan, coordinate and implement projects.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment and make independent decisions in accordance with established policies and procedures related to cataloging.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in law library
  • Involvement in professional legal associations.
  • Ability to create, design and develop handouts for presentations.
  • Working knowledge in one or more foreign languages.

Required Abilities

  • Ability to push, pull and/or lift up to 35 lbs.
  • Ability to stoop, kneel, and/or bend. Some tasks require the ability to perceive and distinguish colors or shades of colors, depth, and visual hues or signals.
  • Must be able to move from one job location to another.
  • Some exposure to adverse environmental conditions such as dust and/or odors.
