POSITION DESCRIPTION:
Under the general supervision of the Public Services Librarian, the Circulation/Reference Librarian supervises the
Circulation and Course Reserve activities of the Law Library, as well as performs legal reference services. Typical duties
and responsibilities consist of, but are not necessarily limited to, the following: planning, recommending and implementing
proposals for developing a cohesive circulation services program; conducting hiring, training and supervision of part-time
student assistants each academic year; scheduling work shifts to provide for circulation desk coverage during all hours
that the library is open; monitoring student hours allocated to the circulation desk; managing the circulation module of
the automated circulation system; maintaining course reserve bibliographic records and printed materials; administering
program for unaffiliated borrowers; keeping circulation statistics; administering overdue procedures; maintaining missing
book records; handling recalls and requests; interpreting library access and circulation policies and resolving patron
disputes as they arise; supervising shelving and regular stack maintenance; supervising the organization and maintenance of
the circulation desk collection; annually collecting and preparing law exams for binding; administering the library’s
online database of law exams; acting as a liaison between the library and journal editors; serving on the collection
development committee; taking part in the library’s faculty liaison program; working in rotation with other reference
librarians at the reference desk; providing legal reference service including nights and weekends when required;
participating in library instructional activities; preparing bibliographies and informational handouts; and handling
administrative projects and other duties as assigned by the Public Services Librarian.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
Education and Experience: Master's in Library and Information Science from an ALA-accredited school; J.D. degree from an
ABA-accredited law school desirable; law library work experience; supervisory experience; strong English language written
and oral communication skills; excellent legal research skills with knowledge of Lexis and Westlaw; and knowledge of HTML
and web-authoring skills desirable. Requires the ability to work some evening and weekend hours when necessary, interact
well with a wide variety of patrons and work collegially with the entire library staff.
