As the University of California’s first law school, UC Hastings College of the Law boasts a rich history of achievement in the field of legal education. Established in 1878 and located in San Francisco’s Civic Center district, our vibrant institution instructs nearly 1,200 students from more than 120 universities and colleges across the country.

The College currently has an immediate, temporary opportunity for a Reference Librarian interested in working a full-time schedule. This is a wonderful opportunity for someone between jobs, etc., to work as a professional librarian in a highly advanced technological environment at one of the most prestigious law schools in the nation.

POSITION DESCRIPTION:
Under the general supervision of the Head of Reference, the Reference Librarian provides legal reference services for the law school’s students and faculty through scheduled reference desk work Monday through Friday. Typical duties consist of, but are not necessarily limited to, the following: providing reference desk services for faculty, students, members of the local legal community and members of the public; assisting other reference librarians in preparing for classroom instruction and researching projects; assisting reference librarians in creating and maintaining the currency of the library’s web site; and performing other information services as assigned by the Head of Reference.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
Experience and Education: M.L.S. from an ALA-accredited program strongly preferred;
M.L.S. candidates with a J.D. accepted; J.D. from an ABA-accredited law school desirable; law library work experience; excellent legal research skills with a thorough knowledge of Lexis, Westlaw and bibliographic databases; and experience developing web pages highly desirable. Must be able to interact well with a wide variety of patrons and work collegially with the entire library staff.
