Reference Librarian: Government Resources Concentration—New York Law School

New York Law School, a dynamic urban law center in the heart of Tribeca, has an opening for a professional reference librarian.  The Library holds a collection of over 500,000 volumes and a full range of electronic subscriptions to support the needs of more than 75 faculty and 1500 students in day, evening and LLM divisions.  The Law School's curriculum is distinguished by its systematic effort to integrate the study of theory and practice and to infuse theoretical analysis with the strategic and ethical questions that make the practice of law an unending challenge.  Many of our programs are anchored within one of the school’s research centers. Job Description:

Our team of reference librarians works together to provide reference service and research instruction to the law school community.  Each librarian participates in the Library’s faculty liaison program, teaches in our extensive research skills teaching program and may serve on various law school committees.  In addition, this librarian is responsible for providing reference assistance, developing instructional programs and preparing electronic and print research guides focusing on state and federal government resources and law sources.  The librarian in this position plays a central role in developing the Library’s government depository and microform collections.  Formal teaching opportunities are possible through appointment to the rank of Professor of Legal Research.  Reference librarians share weekend and some evening hours. 

Job & Educational Requirements:

MLS and JD degrees and previous reference experience are required.  Experience with legal and non-legal electronic information resources; knowledge of U.S. government information sources and depository program; excellent written and oral communications skills; strong service commitment; and evidence of ability to work well with faculty, students and staff in a variety of settings, are essential.

Knowledge Services Manager—Proskauer Rose LLP

Job Description:
    
Under the supervision of the Director of Professional Development & Knowledge Management, the Manager will work with legal and administrative groups to develop and implement knowledge management strategies and tools that drive convenience, efficiency, speed, reuse, and client service.  Responsibilities include helping to set KM direction, facilitating knowledge capture and transfer, and developing and maintaining the Firm’s knowledge systems.

The Manager will be responsible for the Firm’s Library & Research Center including managing the expense budgets, acquisitions, organization, and instruction related to the use of information contained in the Firm’s physical library collections and on-line databases.  He or she will negotiate contracts for all offices for the provision of services including those available via the Internet, as well as in print format, and will develop policies and procedures in order to implement objectives for provision of services and administration of the Library & Research Center. 

The Manager also will monitor new developments in technology as they affect the Firm’s KM initiatives and the Library & Research Center, and serve as a liaison to departments and committees both Firm-wide and in specific offices.

  10. Ability to work cooperatively with others as a member of a service oriented team.

Qualifications:

Candidates should have either a Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of 5 years of law firm or related experience and at least 3 years of experience in Knowledge Management, Library Management or another related field.  A Juris Doctor or Master’s degree in Library Science or Information Science from an accredited school is preferred but not required.  Candidates also should posses a strong commitment to diversity, and excellent leadership, interpersonal, organizational, and management skills.

Job Description:

Under the direction of either the Head Librarian, the Librarian is responsible for the public and technical library services of the NY office law library.

The ideal candidate must have knowledge of print and non-print resources, as well as experience using a variety of legal and non-legal databases. Experience with Westlaw Business (LivEdgar), Questel/Orbit.com, Practical Law Company, and CCH Intelliconnect is a plus. Candidate must be motivated, well-organized, and detail-oriented, available to perform overtime when required, possess excellent verbal and written communication skills, be able to adapt to rapidly, be able to prioritize multiple projects and tasks while meeting deadlines in a dynamic work environment. The candidate must be able to work autonomously as well as in a team environment and be able to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with a variety of library patrons.

In this capacity, the Librarian will:

  • Provide legal and business reference using print and online resources;
  • Interact with vendors;
  • Work beyond scheduled hours as necessary;
  • Handle additional related projects as assigned.

Job & Educational Requirements:

A Master's degree from an ALA accredited institution is required.

Any combination equivalent to:

  • Master's degree from an ALA accredited institution (required);
  • At least 5 years of experience in a law or business library;
  • Specialization in law librarianship.

In addition, the Librarian will be expected to have:

  • Advanced-level proficiency in Microsoft Suite;
  • Expert-to-Advanced-level knowledge of the principles of cataloging and legal bibliography; and
  • Proficiency in online research and legal databases such as Lexis, Westlaw Business (LivEdgar), Questel/Orbit.com, Practical Law Company, and CCH Intelliconnect (preferred).
