Wednesday, March 12, 2003, Houston Area Law Librarians (HALL) welcomes speakers from within its own ranks to fathom the vast resources for legal information via the Internet. Topics include Free vs. fee-based sources; Sarbanes-Oxley Act research; Useful utilities; Basic intellectual property research; Government information on the web; and, International legal research.

 

Registration will include continental breakfast and lunch. Deadline for registration is 12:00 noon, Monday, March 10, 2003.

 

We invite Houston area librarians and library staff from all types of libraries, legal assistants, attorneys, and everyone interested in legal research on the Internet to participate in what we hope will be an educational and interesting program.

The Speakers . . .

 

Free vs. Fee-Based Sources

Paula Howe, Law Librarian, ExxonMobil Law Library

 

Ms Howe has a B.A. in French and International Studies from Elimira College (NY) and a M.L.S. from the University of California, Berkeley.  She was selected as one of the Women of Excellence of the Federation of Houston Professional Women in 1999.

 

Sarbanes-Oxley Act Research

Catherine Whitney, Account Manager, Global Securities Information, Inc.

 

Ms Whitney has ten years of experience as a law librarian. She received her B.M.E. summa cum laude from Baylor University, a post-graduate paralegal degree, attended law school for two years, and is presently enrolled in the M.L.I.S. program of the University of North Texas.               

 

Useful Utilities, Part 2

Riva Laughlin, Librarian, Haynes and Boone, LLP

 

Ms Laughlin has worked in law libraries for the past 20 years, and has taught courses on legal research on the Internet for the last 5 years.

 

Basic Intellectual Property Research

Holly Watson, Librarian, Jenkens & Gilchrist, P.C.

 

Ms Watson received her M.L.S. from the University of North Texas in 1996. She has been a law librarian for 7 years, and is the current President of HALL.


Government Information on the Web

Dina Dreifuerst

 

Ms Dreifuerst, M.L.I.S., has over nine years of experience in law libraries and is the former Law Librarian for Clements, O’Neill, Pierce, Wilson & Fulkerson, LLP. She is Past President of HALL and has taught many continuing education seminars on legal research on the Internet.

 

International Legal Research

Monica Ortale, Faculty Services & Reference Librarian, South Texas College of Law

 

Ms Ortale received her B.A. and M.L.S. from the University of Denver, and received her J.D. from South Texas College of Law. She has served as a Lecturer in the Legal Research and Writing program at South Texas.

The Seminar will be held in the 6th floor conference center of The Fred Parks Law Library, South Texas College of Law. The College is located on San Jacinto, between Clay and Polk in downtown Houston, two blocks south of The Park Shops mall, and near the downtown trolley route; parking is available in several pay lots nearby.
