 Introduction

This annotated selective bibliography is one in a series on state practice materials published in the Law Library Journal. It is divided into six main sections: general publications including primary and secondary source materials; periodicals including both scholarly journals and newspapers; full text CD-ROMs; selected Lexis and Westlaw Internet sites; and Colorado practice treatises and materials. An alphabetical list of Colorado legal publishers with address and phone numbers has been provided at the end of the bibliography in order to provide access to the latest publication and pricing information. 


General Publications

Statutory Sources

Colorado Revised Statutes. Denver, Co.: Bradford Pub. Co., 1973-. Twenty-nine hardbound volumes. Updated by annual pocket parts. Includes current statutes, source notes, references to law reviews and legal encyclopedias, annotations of court decisions, and editor's notes. There is also a constitutions volume which contains the United States Constitution (unannotated) and the Colorado Constitution with annotations of court decisions and editor's notes. The one-volume subject index also contains short titles, popular names, words and phrases, and comparative tables.

West's Colorado Revised Statutes Annotated. St. Paul, MN: West Pub. Co., 1989-. Twenty-nine hardbound volumes. Updated by annual pocket parts and softbound cumulative supplements. Includes current statutes, prior compilation citations, historical and statutory notes, law review commentaries, and library references such as West topic and key numbers, Westlaw topic numbers, Corpus Juris Secundum (CJS) references, and Colorado Practice Series references. There is a constitutions volume which contains the United States Constitution (unannotated) and the Colorado Constitution with law review commentaries, library references, United States Code Annotated references, United States Supreme Court references, and notes o f decisions. There is also a separate two-volume court rules set containing cross references, law review commentaries, library references, Westlaw Electronic Research references, United States Supreme Court references and notes of decisions. The two-volume index which contains a popular name table is replaced annually.

 

Legislation

Journal of the House of Representatives. State of Colorado. Colorado: General Assembly. House of Representatives, 1861-. This two-volume set is published annually and tracks bills introduced into the Colorado House of Representatives. The index contains a history of house and senate bills, resolutions, and memorials as well as biographical and professional information about the members of the Colorado House and Senate.

Journal of the Senate. State of Colorado. Colorado: General Assembly, 1879-. This two-volume set is published annually and tracks bills introduced into the Colorado Senate. The index contains a history of house and senate bills, resolutions, and memorials as well as biographical and professional information about the members of the Colorado House and Senate.

Laws Passed at the Session of the General Assembly of the State of Colorado. Denver, CO: Bradford Pub. Co., 1879-. Includes passed acts, state constitutional amendments, resolutions, memorials, and appropriations. There is an index of bills, resolutions, and memorials as well as tables by bill number and subject matter.

 

Case Reports

Brief Times Reporter. Denver, CO: Public Record Co., 1977-. Published weekly. Contains the slip opinions of the Colorado Supreme Court and Court of Appeals. Also contains rule changes, court announcements, and articles.

Colorado Courts of Appeals Reports. Forty-four volume set containing Colorado Court of Appeals decisions from 1891-1905, 1912-1915, and 1970-1980. Volumes 1-20 (1891-1905) were entitled Reports of the Decisions of the Court of Appeals of the State of Colorado. Volumes 21-27 (1912-1915) were entitled Cases Argued and Determined in the Court of Appeals of Colorado. Volumes 28-44 (1970-1980) were entitled Officially Selected Cases Argued and Determined in the Court of Appeals of th e State of Colorado.

Colorado Reports. Denver, CO: State of Colorado, 1864-1980. Two-hundred volume set containing Colorado Supreme Court decisions from 1862-1980. Volumes 1-16 (1864-1891) were entitled Reports of Cases Determined in the Supreme Court of the Stat e of Colorado. Volumes 17-50 (1891-1910) were entitled Colorado Reports: Cases Adjudged in the Supreme Court of Colorado. Volumes 51-200 (1911-1980) were entitled Cases Argued and Determined in the Supreme Court of the State of Colorado.

Pacific Reporter and West's Pacific Reporter, Second Series. St. Paul, MN: West Pub. Co., 1883-. Contains Colorado Supreme Court decisions from 1883-date and Colorado Court of Appeals decisions from 1891-1905, 1912-1915, and 1970-date.

West's Colorado Reporter. St. Paul, MN: West Pub. Co., 1960-. Contains Colorado cases from the Pacific Reporter (v.1-300) and West's Pacific Reporter, Second Series (v.1-present).

West's Pacific Digest. St. Paul, MN: West Pub. Co., 1864-. Coverage is Colorado state and federal cases from 1864 to date using the West topic and key number system. Indexes cases from the Colorado Reports; Colorado Court of Appeals Re ports; Pacific Reporter; West's Pacific Reporter, Second Series. Includes descriptive word index, table of cases, defendant-plaintiff table, and words and phrases. Library references to Corpus Juris Secundum are included. Updated annually with pocket parts and in May and September with stand alone supplements. Colorado Attorney General Opinions. Denver, CO: Public Record Co., 1977-. Colorado Attorney General opinions are issued as part of the monthly Colorado Register. They are numbered with volume one beginning in October 1977.

 

Administrative Law and Procedure

Code of Colorado Regulations. Denver, Co.: Public Record Corp., 1977-. Twenty-eight looseleaf volumes updated monthly by the Colorado Register. The Code of Colorado Regulations is the official publication of the administrative regulations of the executive departments and agencies of the state of Colorado. These departments and agencies include administration/personnel, revenue, education, natural resources, human services, highways, regulatory agencies, personnel, law, public health and environment, labor and employment, agriculture, local affairs, human services, health care policy and financing, and additional agencies.

Colorado Register. Denver, CO: Public Record Co., 1977-. Monthly publication containing the notice of proposed state administrative regulations and the final regulations and is the updating tool for the Code of Colorado Regulations. It is issued in three sections: the digest of current developments, proposed regulations, and attorney general opinions. The Colorado Register contains the notices of proposed rulemaking, final regulations, digest of current developments, advisory opinions, and attorney general opinions. Includes index volume containing introductory materials, table of contents, topical index, and a state government directory.

Shepard's Colorado Citations. Colorado Springs, CO: Shepard's, 1994. Two hardbound volumes comprising cases and one hardbound volume comprising statutes. Contains citations to the Colorado Reports, Colorado Court of Appeals Reports , Brief Times Reporter, Colorado Lawyer, Pacific Reporter and West's Pacific Reporter, Second Series, United States Constitution, United States Code (1988 edition), Colorado Constitution (1876), Colorado Revised Statutes (1963 and 1973). Colorado Journal of International Environmental Law and Policy. Niwot, CO: University Press of Colorado for The Colorado Journal of International Environmental Law, Inc., 1990-. Published semiannually, this scholarly journal contains articles, book reviews, and comments regarding international environmental issues. Also includes a semiannual survey which includes organization and chronological summaries.

Colorado Lawyer. Denver, CO: Colorado Bar Association, 1972-. Official publication of the Colorado Bar Association. Published monthly. Sections include articles, features, specialty law columns, departments, "from the courts", and advertising sections. The December issue of each year contains a court opinion index for that year and a five-year article index.

Denver Journal of International Law and Policy. Denver, CO: University of Denver College of Law, 1971-. Published three times annually, this scholarly journal contains articles, recent developments, book reviews, and book notes about international law issues.

Denver University Law Review. Denver, CO: University of Denver College of Law, 1923-. Published quarterly, this scholarly journal contains articles, notes, and comments. Volumes 1-5 (1923-1928) were entitled Denver Bar Association Record. Volumes 6-39 (1928-1962) were entitled Dicta. Volumes 40-42 (1963-1965) were entitled Denver Law Center Journal. Volumes 43-61 (1966-1984) were entitled Denver Law Journal. Present title began with volume 62 in 1985.

Transportation Law Journal. Denver, CO: University of Denver College of Law, 1969-. Published three times a year, this scholarly journal "addresses both domestic and international developments of legal, regulatory, economic and political interest in all modes of transportation."

University of Colorado Law Review. Boulder, CO: University of Colorado Law Review, 1929-. Published quarterly, this scholarly journal contains articles, essays, and comments. Volumes 1-34 (1929-1962) were entitled Rocky Mountain Law Review. Present title began with volume 35 in 1962.

 

Newspapers

Colorado Journal. Denver, CO: Public Record Corp., 1995-. Free to subscribers of the Brief Times Reporter. Published weekly, this legal newspaper contains articles, continuing legal education calendars, verdicts and settlements, and advertisements. The Colorado Appellate Report section of the Colorado Journal "contains summaries and full text of all opinions of the U.S. Supreme Court, the Tenth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, and selected opinions of the Federal U.S. Circuit Court o f Appeals. Full text of the orders of the Tenth Circuit are also included."
