The Chicago Association of Law Libraries (CALL) connects a vibrant and diverse network of members by supporting the development of professional expertise; encouraging leadership, collaboration, and advocacy in the legal information community; and promoting and enhancing the field of law librarianship. CALL is a non-profit organization comprised of law librarians and other information professionals in the greater Chicago area. It was formed as a chapter of the American Association of Law Libraries (AALL) in 1947.

CALL Business Meeting Scheduled on May 21

Institute Day to be held on April 7
The Continuing Education Committee has announced that Institute Day will be held on April 7, 2009. This year's theme is "Marketing the Library: How to Create Awareness of, and Demand for Library Services". Attendees can choose from a full-day program or a morning or afternoon session only. 144 members voted in this year's election, a 47.7% return. Chaired by John Austin and with committee members Eugene Giudice, Lenore Glanz, and Sharon Nelson, the Elections Committee did an excellent job of organizing, informing and reminding CALL members to vote. A motion to destory the ballots will be made at the next CALL Business Meeting on May 21.

Joint CALL / SLA Illinois Business Meeting Scheduled on February 27
Mark your calendars for the annual CALL / SLA Joint Business Meeting on Friday, February 27, 2009 at the Union League Club. Susan Roman, dean of Dominican University's Graduate School of Library and Information Science, will be speaking. The Community Service Committee will be holding a book drive; children's books will be donated to Hull House and adult books will be donated to the Newberry Library. Continuing Education Committee Announces RDA and the Future of Cataloging Program
In 2010, Resource Description and Access (RDA) will replace AACR2 as the cataloging standard. Come learn about this exciting revolution in cataloging from the project manager for the development of RDA. The program will be held on Monday, December 15, 2008 and reservations must be received by December 12, 2008. Continuing Education Committee Announces American Hospital Association Resource Center Tour
Interested in learning about key resources for research in the hospital and health-care industry? Join the CALL Continuing Education Committee at the American Hospital Association Resource Center for a tour of their facilities and a brown bag talk on resources for conducting health care industry research. The AHA Resource Center has been in existence since the 1920s and includes over 60,000 volumes of current and historical materials related to health administration. The Research Staff, with over 100 years combined experience in health care research services, provides information to over 10,000 users annually. The tour will be held on Wednesday, October 22, 2008 and reservations must be received by October 15, 2008. Upcoming & Ongoing Community Service Projects
The Community Service Committee will be holding a food drive for the Greater Chicago Food Depository at the November CALL Business meeting. The GCFD especially needs high-protein items (canned meats, beef stew, chili, and peanut butter), canned vegetables and fruits, rice, pasta, and cereal. The committee will also be collecting the following items throughout the year:

  1. Monetary donations for CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) of Cook County
  2. Used cell phones for the Wireless Foundation's Call to Protect program
  3. Pop tabs for Ronald McDonald House (More bags and canisters will be available at the November meeting)

CALL Business Meeting Scheduled on September 18
Mark your calendars for the CALL Business Meeting on Thursday, September 18, 2008 at Maggiano's. Mary Dempsey, commissioner of the Chicago Public Library, will be speaking. The Community Service Committee will be sponsoring a school supply drive to benefit the Chicago Public Schools' Homeless Education Program.

CALL No-Host Dinner at AALL in Portland
The CALL No-Host Dinner at the AALL Annual Meeting in Portland is scheduled for Saturday, July 12, 2008 at 6:00 pm. The no-host dinner precedes the AALL dessert opening reception.

The location of this year's no-host dinner will be Kincaid's Fish, Chop and Steakhouse, 121 SW 3rd Ave., 503-223-6200. Kincaid's currently is the Portland Steak and Chophouse, http://www.portlandchophouse.com, but will be renamed prior to AALL.  Menu (pdf)
