AALL LAUNCHES NEW ADVOCACY LISTSERV

Among the follow-up activities discussed by the participants of AALL's highly successful July workshop, "Law Librarians Meet the 106th Congress: AALL Advocacy Training and Legislative Day," was the inauguration of a special listserv for AALL members interested in actively engaging in grassroots advocacy. Workshop participants were very energized by meeting with their Congressional representatives and staff, and expressed interest in having a mechanism to keep them updated on key issues so that they could further develop their new contacts.

The Washington Affairs Office and the Government Relations Committee have been gratified in the past by the wonderful member response to our action alerts. Grassroots support for our work in impacting national and state information policy is critically important. With the launching of our new advocacy listerv, AALL-ADVOC, we hope to recruit a dedicated group of AALL members who are keenly interested in closely monitoring the issues and in contacting their federal and state representatives, as needed.

AALL-ADVOC IS A MEMBERS ONLY LISTSERV. The new listserv will be a mechanism for us to issue informational updates and action alerts, and very importantly, it will also become a mechanism for members to report back on state and local issues. With so many critically important policy issues facing us right now--including database protection legislation; the possible closing of the National Technical and Information Service (NTIS); and the adoption by the National Conference of Commissioners on Uniform State Laws of the Uniform Computer Information Transactions Act (UCITA)--this new vehicle for grassroots advocacy could not be better timed!
