AALL Action Alert: Cosponsors Needed for IMLS Reauthorization February 28, 2002 BACKGROUND: The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), created in 1996 by the Museum and Library Services Act, is up for reauthorization this year. Since its establishment as an independent Federal agency, IMLS has been very successful in fostering leadership, innovation and lifelong learning by supporting our nations museums and libraries. IMLS programs enable museums and libraries to be core institutions within their communities. Since its establishment in 1996, IMLS has had an excellent track record in providing expert leadership, supporting innovation and creativity, and leveraging state, local and private resources. ACTION NEEDED: H.R. 3784, the "Museum and Library Services Act of 2002," was introduced on February 27th and will be marked-up in the House next week. It is very important to have as many cosponsors as possible by the mark-up hearing. Rep. Peter Hoekstra (R-2-MI) and Rep. Tim Roemer (D-3-IN), chair and ranking member of the House Subcommittee on Select Education, are the key sponsors and they are joined by the 25 cosponsors listed below. When you make your call to your House representative urging support for the FY 2003 funding for IMLS, please be sure to urge also that your representative become a cosponsor of H.R. 3784. Very importantly, if your representative is listed below as already being among the 25 cosponsors of the bill, be sure to say "Thank you" for their support. Thank you,
Mary Alice Baish, AALL Associate Washington Affairs Representative CURRENT COSPONSORS (25) of H.R. 3784:
