Who is eligible to join AALL?

AALL has three membership categories in accordance with the Bylaws, which were revised in October 2012.

Active:
Any person who is interested in the objectives of the Association.

Retired:
Any person who is interested in the objectives of the Association, who has retired from active membership, and who does not qualify for associate membership.

Student: A student member must be enrolled in a degree program related to law librarianship. Membership in this category is limited to five consecutive years.

What is the cost of membership to AALL?

As of March 1, 2014, active membership dues are $234 and student and retired membership dues are $60 for our membership year. Though the year technically runs June 1- May 31, signing up after March 1 will grant you full benefits effective immediately.

Membership dues are prorated on September 1 and December 1. Special interest section memberships are $20 each and are not prorated.

How are the dues prorated throughout the year?

All membership dues are prorated on September 1 and December 1. After March 1, all members join and renew for the next dues year at the full rate. Members receive March, April and May for free and their membership dues are paid through May 31 of the next dues year. Special interest section dues are not prorated.

Active membership dues start at $234, and the schedule is as follows for the 2014-15 dues year:
March 1 - August 31, 2014: $234
September 1 - November 30, 2014: $175.50
December 1, 2014 - February 28, 2015: $117
After March 1, 2015 the dues will increase and the membership will expire on 5/31/16.

Student and retired members start at $60, and the schedule is as follows for the current 2014-15 dues year:
March 1 - August 31, 2014: $60
September 1 - November 30, 2014: $45.
December 1, 2014 - February 28, 2015: $30
After March 1, 2015 the dues will increase and the membership will expire on 5/31/15.

How do I join?

Select JOIN NOW ONLINE or the Printable Membership Application. If you chose online, complete the application form as instructed, submitting online with credit card payment. If you chose the printable version, submit it via fax to +1-312-431-1097, email (membership@aall.org) or mail it, with payment, to American Association of Law Libraries, 94340 Eagle Way, Chicago, IL 60678-9430. If you live outside the United States, membership dues must be paid by check in USD$.

What if I am unemployed?

To help in these tough times, AALL is offering a discounted membership rate for AALL members who are recently unemployed. The discounted membership appears online and in all public records simply as an active membership but is billed at the student/retired rate ($60 instead of $234). The discounted rate is good through May 31, 2015. Unemployed AALL members cannot join or renew using the online form. If you wish to receive this discount, you must use the printable application. If you become fully employed during this time, we ask that you pay the remaining balance on your membership, less the discounted rate already paid, so that we may continue to offer the discount to your fellow librarians.

Can I renew my membership or add special interest sections over the phone?

Yes! Please call (312) 205-8022 and we can take care of any additions or membership renewals right over the phone at any time during the year. A receipt PDF can be sent to you once your credit card has been processed.

What should I do if I need an invoice?

Please contact our membership services coordinator, Hannah Phelps Proctor, at (312) 205-8022 or via email at membership@aall.org who will create an invoice that can be processed more easily by your employer. Invoices can be emailed to you via PDF or sent through USPS directly to your employer.
