Kudos to Publishing Initiatives Caucus (PIC)/Promoting Law Librarians to the Legal Community
Check out the wonderful PIC website, started in 2003 under Sally Holterhoff and Lyn Warmath's leadership. Holly Riccio developed the web page, and Ann Long (along@fellerssnider.com), the current chair, adds citations as AALL members forward them to her and plays the general role of cheerleader for the group! Heartfelt congratulations and many thanks to all of you who contribute articles to non-law library publications that reflect positively on our profession. The growing number of articles written by our members is truly impressive. Thanks for your talent and enthusiasm, and keep up the good work!
Kudos to AALLNET and Susan's "From the Desk Of" Messages
Association Trends just announced the winners of its All Media Contest and AALLNET has received a GOLD award for Web site Excellence and another Bronze award for Susan's FTDO. Great job, AALL!
Sad News
We recently received the sad news that Oscar Strothers, a beloved retired member of AALL, passed away. As Rita Parham says, "[F]or those of you who remember Oscar, you have wonderful memories of a man who mentored many and made wonderful contributions to the field of law librarianship. To those of you who did not have the pleasure of meeting Oscar, he is best introduced by Marvin Anderson from an article that appeared in Law Library Journal, 'Meet my mentor: a collection of reminiscences,' compiled by Frank G. Houdek, 91 Law Libr. J. 184-185."
Oscar Strothers' funeral will be held on Saturday, December 3, at the J.B. Jenkins Funeral Home, 7474 Landover Road, Landover, MD 20785, (301) 322-2300. Marvin notes that some memories might be shared at the service. Send them to Helen Strothers, 1227 Girard St. N.E., Washington, DC. 20017. Please also check the obituary notices: http://www.legacy.com/washingtonpost/LegacyHome.asp.
Sara Turley Cole, the long-time director of the law library at The University of Memphis, passed away on Saturday morning, November 26, at her home, following a lengthy illness. In addition to directing the law library, she taught courses in contracts and legal research and writing. She retired due to health reasons in 2000. Funeral arrangements are pending at Canale Funeral Directors, Memphis, Tennessee.
AALL Supports Diversity in Curriculum
The Executive Committee recently agreed to support "WISE+:Leveraging the Power of the Network to Increase the Diversity of Library and Information Science Curriculum," a proposal by The School of Information Sciences at the University of Pittsburgh, The Graduate School of Library and Information Science at the University of Illinois Urbana Champaign, The School of Information Studies at Syracuse University, and the WISE (Web-based Information Science Education) consortium to the Institute of Museum and Library Services under Priority 5 (Building Institutional Capacity) of the Laura Bush 21st Century Librarian grant program. IMLS will notify applicants of final decisions in mid-June.
Au Revoir, Reggie
Last Monday was Director of Information Technology Reggie Swanigan's last day after five years of service to AALL. We wish Reggie well in his new endeavors, and Susan Fox is in the process of a search for his replacement.
