Watch Your Mail: 2005 Salary Survey is Coming

The questionnaires for the AALL 2005 Biennial Salary Survey and Organizational Characteristics will be mailed May 13 to all law library directors and heads of law libraries.

To provide the detailed salary breakdowns that members have requested, AALL strongly urges all who receive the questionnaire to participate in the survey. The Association also asks members to encourage their library directors to complete the questionnaires. Completed questionnaires are due on May 31.

The AALL 2005 Biennial Salary Survey and Organizational Characteristics will be the only source for up-to-date information about salaries for law librarians and other law library employees who work in academic libraries; private firms and corporate libraries; and state, court, and county law libraries. The survey is customized to provide information unique to the needs of these types of libraries, including position, region, gender, education, years in current position, years of experience, and membership in AALL. The section on organizational characteristics examines the salary data within the context of the size of library budgets, staff, and user ratios.

The survey will be carried out in complete confidentiality by Association Research, Inc., a professional research firm in Rockville, Maryland, that works exclusively with nonprofit organizations.

The 2005 Biennial Salary Survey and Organizational Characteristics will be available for purchase and shipment in July; $110 for AALL members and $175 for nonmembers. The final report will also be available online at AALLNET in the Members Only section free of charge. The Association is accepting advance orders by e-mail at orders@aall.org, by fax at 312/431-1097, or by calling AALL Headquarters at 312/939-4764, extension 12.

AALL/LEXISNEXIS® Research Grant for 2005

The AALL Research Committee recently announced that the AALL/LexisNexis® Research Grant for 2005 was awarded to Nancy Carol Carter, Director of the Legal Research Center and Professor of Law at the University of San Diego School of Law, for her project: A Research Template for Building Indian Nation Archives.

Competition for the grants was competitive this year with five submissions, each of which showed great promise. The high number of quality submissions submitted this year (there were 11 submitted in the Fall AALL/Aspen competition) certainly reflects well on the vitality of our profession and the high interest in meaningful scholarship among our members. We thank LexisNexis® for their generous support of this important program.

Legislative Advocacy Leadership Training Planned for San Antonio

Please join the Government Relations Committee, the Washington Affairs Office, and a room full of law librarians for the very exciting Legislative Advocacy Leadership Training in San Antonio on Saturday, July 16th. All politics is local, and this is a great opportunity to learn more about AALL's legislative agenda and how you can help us promote our positions on crucial policy and legislative matters. It's also a great opportunity to network with other active law librarians and make a real impact on the future of our profession.

This year's half day workshop will focus especially on state funding issues for law libraries and changes to the Federal Depository Library Program that are of concern to our community. While there is no cost for this important training session, we ask that you please register by June 15th by contacting Mary Alice Baish. A copy of the agenda is can be found here. We look forward to seeing you there!
