Private Law Libraries SIS-Sponsored Listserv Discussion: Marketing Your Library to Your Summer Associates

Have you ever talked with a group of colleagues and walked away inspired by their great ideas? We have! We're fortunate enough to have some incredibly talented colleagues in our midst -- librarians who promote their libraries in new and unique ways.

Now is your chance to learn how others market their libraries and share some of your own marketing ideas. Participate in a listserv discussion sponsored by the Private Law Libraries Special Interest Section on “Marketing Your Library to Your Summer Associates” June 23 - June 27.

More information can be found here.

Watch Your Mail: 2003 Salary Survey is Coming

The questionnaires for the AALL 2003 Biennial Salary Survey and Organizational Characteristics will be mailed June 20 to all law library directors and heads of law libraries.

To provide the detailed salary breakdowns that members have requested for the next edition of the salary survey, AALL strongly urges all who receive the questionnaire to participate in the survey. The Association also asks members to encourage their library directors to complete the questionnaires. Completed questionnaires are due on July 25.

Seattle Registrations Strong

We are now less than four weeks away from the Annual Meeting and registrations are strong. To date, we have 1,788 registrations. Compared with the 1,364 we had at this time last year, we expect Seattle to be one of our most successful meetings yet. I’m looking forward to seeing you all there!

Bookless in Seattle

The Social Responsibilities Special Interest Section will sponsor its 5th Annual Books for Children drive that will donate books for elementary school children in Seattle. The recipient this year is First Place School, the education component of a social service agency serving children and families in transition. More information on how you can donate is available here.

Maximize Your Annual Meeting Experience - Suggestions Recap

Over the past several weeks, the 2003 Annual Meeting Program Committee has identified “10 Ways to Maximize Your Annual Meeting Experience” to assist you in making the most of your attendance at the 96th AALL Annual Meeting and Conference July 12-16 in Seattle at the Washington State Convention and Trade Center. As you make your final preparation for the Annual Meeting, here is a recap of our suggestions.

AALL and West Award $9,500 in Strait Scholarships

Three students pursuing their master’s degrees in library science were awarded this year’s AALL and West George A. Strait Minority Scholarships worth $9,500. Learn more about Filoberto Govea, Debora Taylor, and Florante Ibanez here.

Information Access Alliance Urges Justice Dept. to Block Cinven and Candover Purchase of Bertelsmannspringer

The Information Access Alliance, a group of six library organizations including AALL, is urging the U.S. Department of Justice to block Cinven and Candover’s proposed purchase of Bertelsmann Springer. The Alliance is concerned that this transaction will bring about a reduction in access to critical research information. More information is available here.

Educational Needs Assessment Survey

By now, those of you who did not fill out the survey online should have received a hard copy version. I hope that you will fill out the survey and give us the benefit of your thoughts. Your opinion counts! Also, if you filled out the survey online and received a hard copy survey in the mail, you do not need to fill out the survey again.

It is with the generous support of BNA, Inc. that we are able to produce this survey. BNA, Inc.’s ongoing support of continuing education for law librarians has enabled AALL to reach a new level of maturity in programming. We deeply appreciate their financial assistance.

Sincerely,

Carol Avery Nicholson
AALL President
