Educational Needs Assessment Survey Now Online

By now all of you should have received a communiqu from President Carol Avery Nicholson containing a URL to the online Educational Needs Assessment Survey. We encourage you to fill out the survey online because it economizes on the cost of printing and mailing paper copies. It should take you no longer than 15-20 minutes to fill out, and it also gives you the opportunity to provide some open ended comments. If you have further comments on the future of AALL educational programming outside of those requested, please feel free to contact either President Carol Avery Nicholson, Tim Coggins, Chair of the Professional Development Committee, or me. Your voice is important to us as we determine the future of educational programming in AALL.

We are deeply grateful to BNA, Inc. for their unwavering support of AALL's professional development programming and for their generous support in producing this survey.

Award Winning Law Librarians

Congratulations to the recipients of the Marion Gould Gallagher Distinguished Service Award!

One of AALL's most prestigious awards, the Marion Gould Gallagher Distinguished Service Award recognizes esteemed law librarians for their long time service to the profession and to AALL. This year's recipients are:

Marvin R. Anderson, who has been active in AALL, including stints as chair of the State, Courts and County Law Libraries Special Interest Section and President of the Minnesota Association of Law Libraries. He was chair of the Local Advisory Committee for the 2001 AALL Annual Meeting in Minneapolis. Although retired, he recently accepted the challenge of spearheading AALL's campaign to raise $100,000 to match West's contribution to the George A. Strait Minority Scholarship fund.

Leah Chanin has had a long a varied career in academic law libraries and legal scholarship. Although well respected as a legal scholar, Chanin has been a devoted advocate of law libraries and librarians. She was an active member of AALL, serving first on the Executive Board and then as President in 1982-83. She was also President of the Southeastern Chapter of AALL from 1970-1972.

Francis Robert Bob Doyle will receive the award for his contributions to law librarianship throughout a distinguished career of more than 45 years. He has served as mentor to generations of law librarians and law directors by actively participating in law librarianship organizations. He was a co-founder of the Chicago Legal Academic System, a consortium of academic law libraries in Illinois, Wisconsin and Indiana. He also served as President of the Chicago Association of Law Libraries and the Conference of Jesuit Law School Libraries. AALL has benefited from Doyle's leadership, too. He has served on numerous committees throughout the years, including the Indexing to Periodical Literature Committee and the Nominations Committee.

The Marion Gould Gallagher Distinguished Service Award will be presented at the AALL Association Luncheon July 14 during the 2003 Annual Meeting in Seattle. Please join us in congratulating Marvin R. Anderson, Leah Chanin, and Francis Robert Bob Doyle for their outstanding contribution to law librarianship and to AALL.

National Survey of State Laws Author Recipient of Joseph L. Andrews Bibliographical Award

The AALL Awards Committee has selected Richard A. Lieter as the recipient of the 2003 Joseph L. Andrews Bibliographical Award for his noted work, The National Survey of State Laws, 4th ed.

A standard reference source since its first publication in 1993, Leiters book is familiar to most law librarians. The work covers 45 controversial topics that are often the subject of comparative state research. In chart format, it briefly explains the laws of each state and provides citations to relevant code sections. The National Survey of State Laws has saved countless researchers and librarians significant time and effort in performing multistate research. The work has been previously recognized by the New York Public Library as One of the Year's Outstanding Reference Books and has been cited several times by the U.S. Supreme Court.

The award will be presented at the AALL Association Luncheon July 14 during the 2003 Annual Meeting in Seattle. Please join us in congratulating Richard A. Leiter for his outstanding contribution to legal bibliographical literature.

Maximize Your Annual Meeting Experience: Take Advantage of the Exhibit Hall

Here's this week's tip on maximizing your annual meeting experience, courtesy of Annual Meeting Program Committee member Betty Roeske:

In addition to the outstanding programs and workshops, AALL members can look forward to meeting vendors and taking home law library products at the AALL Exhibit Hall during the 2003 AALL Annual Meeting in Seattle.

This year's Exhibit Hall will feature vendors with tools designed to help law librarians manage daily, on-the-job challenges. A wide range of products will be on hand, including books, online services, furniture, library supplies and bibliographic services. Your time in the Exhibit Hall will give you an opportunity to network with sales representatives, critique new products and talk to vendors about their services. Don't forget that a trip to the Exhibit Hall also gives you a chance to pick up all of those great giveaways for your staff and family!

The Exhibit Hall will also be the site for the AALL Internet Room and the AALL Activities Area.

Please join your colleagues for the Exhibit Hall Ribbon Cutting and Coffee Break at 9 a.m. on July 13 in theWashington State Convention & Trade Center

Diversity Symposium to Address Affirmative Action

The Diversity Symposium will tackle the pros and cons of affirmative action in higher education from 2 p.m.-5 p.m. on July 12 at the 2003 AALL Annual Meeting in Seattle.

Titled Affirmative Action after Grutter & Gratz: Where Do We Go from Here? the symposium will feature a lively debate on using affirmative action to achieve a diverse student population. Curt Levey of the Center for Individual Rights will argue against affirmative action, and Henry McGee Jr., former prosecutor and civil rights attorney and currently distinguished professor of law at Seattle University, will explain why he is in favor of affirmative action in higher education.

As the U.S. Supreme Court prepares to rule on a couple of consolidated cases involving the University of Michigan's affirmative action policies, the court's ruling could potentially set the tone for affirmative action in the next few decades. With many individuals and various groups quite vocal about their positions on this issue, the AALL Diversity Committee considers this panel discussion and debate on the significance of this ruling to be a most interesting and timely topic for this year

This year's Diversity Symposium was coordinated by Judy Floyd Evans, chair of the Diversity Committee; Allen Moye of the George Mason University School of Law Library; and Madeline Hebert of the Louisiana State University Paul M. Hebert Law Center Library.

The Association gratefully acknowledges LexisNexis™ for its support of this program.

For more information about the program, please contact Diversity Committee Chair Judy Floyd Evans, director, marketing programs at the LexisNexis Librarian Relations Group, at 800/227-9597, extension 57963.
