The Honorable Ted Stevens
Chairman, Committee on Appropriations
U.S. Senate
Washington, DC 20510

Dear Senator Stevens:

On behalf of the American Association of Law Libraries, American Library Association, Association of Research Libraries and Special Libraries Association, thank you for your leadership in the passage of H.R. 2209, Legislative Branch Appropriations for FY98.

As a conferee on the bill, we urge you to support the House level ($29,264,000) for the Superintendent of Documents Salaries and Expenses Appropriation. Most of this appropriation is used to provide your constituents with public access to government information through the GPO Access program and Federal Depository Libraries. These depositories are in 1,367 designated libraries throughout the United States which receive federal publications in multiple formats. Three other programs also are funded through this appropriation: the International Exchange Program, the cataloging and indexing of government publications, and the distribution of publications authorized by law at the request of Members of Congress and other government agencies.

We also request that you ask your colleagues in the House to support the Senate level ($381,653,000) for the Library of Congress in the conference. The higher Senate level would allow needed increases in the purchase of and preservation of library materials, in automation, and in additional recording machines for users of the National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped.

Sincerely,

Robert L. Oakley
